    Hi;
    I am doing some research on my ancestors from County Longford but am getting stuck. I'll be down in Longford anyway next week so was thinking of popping into their library to see if i could get any futher with records.
    I've never done anything like this so not sure what to expect.
    Should i bring a pen and paper or can records be photocopied?
    Do you usually have to make an appointment?
    Any other tips i should know?
    Any help appreciated!
    Thanks

    Well first of all I presume you've checked the library website to see what's on offer in Local Studies department http://www.longfordlibrary.ie/geneaology.html

    I would ring the library to see if you need to book a microfilm reader for things like the Tithes. You can print from the microfilm reader. Definitely bring pencil and paper to make notes. Photocopying may be possible depending on the copyright situation.

    In my experience the best resource in my local library is the local newspaper archives. If you know the date that your relatives died (from a headstone etc) just find the next edition of the local paper and more often than not I found a short death notice, complete with a short description of your relatives occupation, personality and a list of chief mourners at the funeral most of whom will be other family members.
