HIIT or jogging

I want to improve my energy levels and as part of an overall program I was wondering if 30-45 minutes of HIIT would be better than jogging 1.5-2 hours.

I would do 3 to 5 sessions a week when I have time.

    This is not an either-or.

    Do both.

Going jogging before hiit would mean i run out of steam quickly once i start the intervals.

a good hiit session would not leave enough in the tank to go jogging for 30-60 afterwards so with my schedule it is kind of a case of either or.

i figure a 10 minute jog to warm up before a 30-60 minute hiit session might be best?

Not both at the same time. Mix it up.

If you want to train 3 times a week, do two HIIT sessions and one long jog.
I also think 30-60 mins for HIIT is too long (especially if you're doing it right). :)

10 minutes is too short to gain any of the benefit associated with jogging, but if you want to do it to warm up that's cool.

If you're doing 60 minutes of HIIT, you're probably not going hard enough.

With HIIT you should really be emptied after 20 mins.

Id chime in here with similar thoughts to those posted above.

Doing HIIT running, or rowing or KB swinging or whatever should be done in blocks for time.
say 10 mins of 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off, recovery period and go again 3-5 times.

An example of HIIT Ive used with the lads I coach is to set up a 150m course using 6 cones spaced 5m apart so 1 cone at 0m,5m,10m,15m,20m and 25m.

Going out to 5 and back, out to 10 and back, out to 15 and back, out to 20 and back and out to 25 and back is a distance of 150m.

The lads would 6 intervals of 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off trying to cover as much of the 150 metre course as possible, after the 30 seconds of intensity, they walk back to the start and rest for 30 seconds before going again.

If you really empty the tank, 6 minutes can be enough for that block, take a 5 min recovery and do it again.

Another way to do this would be to say, right, Im gonna cover the entire 150m course 10 times.
You sprint the whole course and rest til you feel you can go again, this recovery time will normally get longer after each run until all 10 150s have been covered. I wouldnt let the recovery time go over 2 minutes though really.

I have issues with jogging, particularly on hard surfaces.
Its not too bad on grass or sand for example.

if you were doing 5 sessions a week, you could try 3 HIIT ones interspersed with 2 60 minute brisk walks, much easier on the joints.

Sand is probably the worst surface to run on over concerted periods. It's a good way to develop achilles problems.

    Didnt know that, Thanks.
I was coming at it purely from a knee point of view as I have a pretty dodge right one.

Probably best to ignore it though. I should probably stick to the BJJ.

I usually do 10 minutes of HIIT Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. I do 45 seconds of full pace, then a 15 second rest and after 10 minutes I'm usually broken so if you are doing 30-45 minutes, you're definetly not pushing hard enough.

On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I do 15 minutes of jogging after my workout. Seems to be working well for me

After Built Like a Badass you should do Sense of Humour Training. Don't sweat it I certainly didn't.

    You gonna run the course?
Will there be coffee and treats?
    If so, I'm in.

I find it hard to extract humour from the typed word sometimes.
    It lacks tone.

You're alright Liam. Just assume it's all a joke is the easiest way.

Ah Barry and Liam go way back. If you're not used to Barry's sense of humour it can take a bit of readjustment. Sure I've already had a reported post about it this morning, although that was as much to take a pop at me as anything else.

    *waves*

    Anyway, back on topic folks
