    Hi,

Someone rang me earlier, and told me that they have an Apple TV (A1378 - 2nd gen AppleTV), which they had jailbreaked, and installed plex on.

She said she couldn't use iTunes, but had no problems with Plex, before the update.

She updated it on Thursday, and now Apple TV is just powering on. Nothing else happens. Light comes on, nothing on the TV etc..

Is there any way of unbricking it? I haven't searched much to be honest, because i thought i'd ask in here first, and see if anyone else has had this happen to them.

this happened to me when i jailbroke mine, except i hadnt updated, the jailbreak just didnt take properly. i had to restore to factory and jailbreak again.

is the firmware she updated to jailbreakable?

Unfortunately, i don't know. It's the newest firmware, so i doubt it.

Factory reset doesn't work, nor do any of the usual recommendations..

    BRICKED?
Presumably it will be unbrickable in the future, just wondering is it yet..

So forgetting about jailbreaking for the moment, you're sure you can't put the atv into dfu mode and restore it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 773 ✭✭✭Jakmeehan

It's almost definitely not bricked. As above, put it into DFU mode and restore via iTunes. 99% chance that will work.

How come she couldn't use iTunes while it was jail broken? Doesn't make sense.

I can't see any reason why she wouldn't be able to use it. iTunes will see it in DFU mode anyway, whether it saw it before/sees it now or not.

Edit: I should add that this happened to me last week. I had it jailbroken and decided to update it OTA to see what would happen to the jailbreak :P The light came on the unit but nothing on the TV, same as the OP. I just restored it in iTunes and it was grand. In fact, I didn't even have to put it in DFU mode.

Yes, but it's a tethered jailbreak

Seasonpass gives an untethered jailbreak on ATV2 iOS 4.3.3.

Do apple tvs now ship with a later iOS version? Don't think so.

Hi and thanks for the replies,
Sorry i haven't got back, i was trying to find out exactly what she has done with it, and now i have her ATV here with me...
Unfortunately, i have not got an Apple tower, or laptop. I have one with liquid damage.. not much use.

Can i put it into DFU mode using a PC, with Linux/XP/Vista/7? I have access to any of them this evening, but not any Apple OS.
I am going to try it now with XP..

    EDIT..
Forgot i'd have to download iTunes..:mad:

Ah yes, you're right. The latest version can be untethered jailbroken. My bad!

Yes, any windows box will do fine. You will also need to download the latest apple tv IPSW. You can let iTunes download it for you when you choose "Restore" or you can download it from here. You want the "Apple TV 2G (4.3/8F455)".

    Hi Massy, and thanks..
I have the ATV2 connected to both power and USB, after installing iTunes.

I followed the directions given in Jakmeehans post LINK (Also thanks btw :))

And the :) the sounds of USB disconnecting and then reconnecting played, followed by
    Found New Hardware

A problem occurred during hardware installation. Your new hardware might not work properly.

But nothing else. Happened on Windows 7 and XP... (Two different laptops)

But nothing on either mentions DFU mode.

    Any ideas?

    1. Is iTunes recognising it? It should appear in iTunes with a "This Apple TV is in recovery mode" notification. (It says recovery mode, but it means DFU :))

    2. Are you sure its in DFU mode? It can be very tricky to get an apple tv in DFU mode:/

    1. Nope, iTunes doesn't seem to be recognising it. No notification, also, no "devices".

    2. Nope. Not sure.. I have pressed menu + down until light starts blinking fast, then menu + play, again until light starts blinking fast. This is when the USB sounds come. The Sound of USB device disconnecting, and then reconnecting.. Then nothing..

    EDIT:
Gone to try get a different Micro USB cable..

Are you still holding it after you hear the notification sounds? You need to keep holding it until it appears in iTunes.

Also, have you checked if iTunes recognises it in "normal" mode?

There is a difference with WIndows 7 and XP..
In XP, it blinks both times, and stops itself the second time (Menu + play)

But in Windows 7, it stops ,and starts again (fast blinking), but no notifications at all in 7.. Not even the USB sounds, which i was getting a few minutes ago...

    EDIT..

    Hold on, sounds are reversed..

Now it plays Connecting sound first, and has just disconnected itself..

But apart from that, nothing. No visual notifications of any kind.

Sounds like it's not going into DFU mode. Again, it can be very tricky (read: frustrating) to get it into DFU mode. Just keep trying, read some tutorials, watch some YouTube tutorials etc. You'll get it eventually :D

Massive thanks to everyone.. Got into DFU mode just now.. Oh My God, that was a horrible (Frustrating being a massive understatement!!:mad:) task.

I Pressed Menu + Down until lights start blinking, then, IMMEDIATELY pressed menu + play and waited for the lights to start blinking, again, i immediately released, and the light flickered differently.. Oh, When i heard the USB connect.. I waited for the disconnect sound... it never came.. Then i saw the big picture of the Apple TV in iTunes... AAaaaahhh.. Relief seeped out of every pore of my body..

    Again, big thanks to all!

    EDIT.

After it updates and restores firmware, i got a message that says it could not be done properly, or something similar. I unplugged it, tried it in the TV anyway, and it's working fine.

Gonna try THIS fingers crossed.. (DANG! I just read DFU mode again :eek:)

The best way is to use Seas0nPass. It creates a custom, pre-jailbroken IPSW that you restore to.

I found snowbreeze worked best for me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,127 ✭✭✭kjl

    Sn0wbreese doesn't work any more,

the only way to jailbreak a new Apple TV running 8f455 is by using the latest version of Seas0npass.

Oh and make sure you plug it into tv first and set up network, otherwise getting it into dfu mode is difficult.

you then have to do the following

(this assumes you are using windows)
    1) download putty from here
    2) In "Host Name (or IP address)" put "Apple-TV.local." and click open
    3) This will load a black screen with "login as:" type "root"
    4) next line will say "root@Apple-TV.local.'s password:" type password, but don't be alarmed, it does not put text on screen
    5) Type: "echo “deb http://apt.awkwardtv.org ./” > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/awkwardtv.list"

6) Type: "apt-get update"

7) Type: "apt-get install com.nito.nitoTV
"
    8) Type: "killall Lowtide", it may give you an error about nothing to kill
    9) The apple TV will now restart when you log on again you will see a panel called nitro tv
    10) the first thing you install is updatebegone
    11) next install xbmc, you may wish to use the nightly build which has a lot of bug fixes such as music visualisations, I found this guide good for that
    http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Install_XBMC_on_ATV2#Installing_the_latest_nightly_build
    12) overflow is a handy enough app, because after a while you won't even use the apple tv functions this cleans up the menu a little.

I bought a new Apple TV this morning and it is jailbroken with xbmc installed perfectly
