What do you need to look for in one?
    Any common problems?

ok its not boxy but I wasn't sure what year production on the squarer style ended and was hoping by saying its box like that people would know the model I'm on about.
I think its pre 1992. Also I never said boxy now did I?
    Thanks for the help Owen.

I wasn't having a go at you directly, but I'm just worried these'll become the next boy racer trend, thereby driving prices astronmically high for what is a very average car. The model you're looking for is the K10 Micra I believe - and despite all the nostalgia, they're a terrible car, with appauling safety.

Thats a bit disappointing. Thanks for the input. To be honest I hope it doesn't become a boy racer like car. Id be looking to keep it original looking.

Would a ford fiesta be better?

Why do you want such an old car?

Ya its the k10 micra. Grand for a car to run around town in, but anything faster than that can be scary. Im normally a very good passenger, but when i go on the motorway with my girlfriend it can be a bit frightening. No passenger mirror or rear seat belts dont help. Shes looking at new cars, the sooner she gets rid of it the better.

This will only be a run around up and down to limerick along lough derg. So short trips on a back road. Will be usually on my own so no seat belts in back okay.
Passenger mirror is a bit odd not to have.

Not as odd as things like ABS, Airbags ... why someone'd willingly put themselves into a death trap with no redeemable features is beyond me.

Its an 89, never had one on it. Also its about as secure as tayto bag. GF was driving to work one morning and the car sounded louder than usual. When i looked at it that night the door was sitting into the frame right. Thought it might have been the hinges first, then realised someone had tried to open it by pulling out the top of the door. Door bent enough so it wouldnt fit in right into the frame. Took no effort at all to bend it back into shape with my knee and a quick pull. Really opened my eyes as to what would happen in a crash.

I plan on not crashing it.

If you want a k10 micra how does a Fiesta fit the bill? An old Fiesta would be a woeful heap of sh1t too, at least the Micra should be reliable.

Any common problems with a Micro k10? That I should look out for?
Not pro and cons for buying a car from the late 80s or early 90s.I know older cars are not as safe as a new fiesta, corsa, micro, punto, etc...

Well at least now I know that the micro would be more reliable. We had one of does as well when was younger.

Im getting the car for nostalgia reasons. I have another car, girlfriend has one and we have a beetle as well.

I will be only driving it an odd time.

It is a K10 micra you are after. They are a fun little car to drive, get one with a 1.2 engine they are nippy. The ones from the UK were all 5 speed, most of the original Irish ones were 4 speed. Just look out for rust, other than that there is nothing major to go wrong with them, some of them had a problem where the flywheel would be missing a few teeth from use, so if the starter stopped on this spot it wouldn't start, let go of the key and try again usually sorts it. This is the only real problem they had that I can think of right now, otherwise a great car.

my first car was a jap import k10 1.2 turbo , great car , even if it was a micra that my girlfriend still slags me about. the ring gear is the only major thing that gave trouble , need to take gearbox out to replace it and may also need a starter as well as the ring gear and starter come in contact and when starting so if one is damaged , the other usually is too. could be hard finding a clean one now though, best of luck with it.
