We looked at getting a newer car (7 seater) after looking for a while decided on a car in northern ireland. Checked the VRT it was reasonable so purchased the car. We now have it back in the south it needed a few things doing as it's a 2005 got them done and now and looked again at the VRT and it's increased by nearly €400 only 10 days later. Now we got a car from the UK 4 years ago and the same thing happened. It's as if they know!!! has anyone else experienced this? it's very anoying.!!!!

How can they justify €1500 on a car worth €4000 it's legalised robery!!!!!
There seems to be no way out of this pay it or give up the car.....

That's very close to 36%, is the car in the top band? If the valuation is excessive then you can appeal - AFAIK if your evidence is compelling then you'll get money back.

No It's the basic model.. I've looked at the appeal process "looks very complicated"!!! but worth a try, thanks..

most appeals from what i've whitnessed come back successful.
also submit any receipts for work that was required to be done to make it road worthy and you will be refunded more too.

only problem is you need to pay first then appeal in most cases.

Is it a 36% emissions car or not? Whats the car & do you have an emissions figure from the reg cert?
The figures can be a bit high at times but if its clearly wrong, you will get it back.
On the plus side, its an 05 car and therefore you will pay nothing for any extras the car has.

Its an 05 aren't emissions irrelevant ? Isn't it by engine size ?

The percentage is based on OMSP not what you paid for it.

OP my guess is you clicked some slightly different options when filling out the VRT calculator webpage.

For motortax, its engine size but vrt is on emissions regardless.

mark how do you know the % there are figures on the cert
    CO2(g/km) 177G/KM
    CO (g/km or g/kWh) 0.652
    HC (g/km or g/kWh) 0.128
    NOx (g/km or g/kWh) 0.086
    It's a Renault Grand Scenic 16V 1.6 petrol

Co2 is what you want - puts it in band e.
VRT should be 28% of OMSP

the 28% seems to be correct it's the OMSP has increased €1000 and the depreciation increased by 4%. It's this I can't believe.
Having sold a car in the last week the price only came down!!
What they are saying is the price of a second hand car has increased in the last 10 days. This is rubbish!, the prices are comming down. Youv'e only to watch cars on the likes of carzone and donedeal to know that, they're being reduced all the time.
    It's a joke!!!!!

Yes but how do you know you hit those options the first time round - you printed it out ? REmember even a letter difference can have different omsp. If you selected 1.6 or 1.6v might be different

yes printed all options for renault grand scenic and printed all options this time so know I'm right as all OMSP's have increased by €1000. Thats how i'm so sure! I've gone over it and over it... it's just another government rip off!!!!!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28 shiciara

I had a budget a very tight budget and now have to consider selling the car as it's another weeks wages to VRT the thing!!!!

Cool. AFAIK the OMSP are set by the industry/SIMI or at least they have a hand in it. Only thing you can do I guess is pay it and appeal it. What I would do is go onto done deal/adverts and print off a load of ads matching your car and bring them to appeal to challenge to OMSP

Edit: Also bring your original VRT estimate and also documents proving date of purchase etc.

Talk to the revenue about the original print out VRT calc, as far as I know I thought they were obliged to honour that for a certain length of time ?
