People Who Don't Use Facebook

Im curious to know what people think when they find out someone doesn't use Facebook.

I myself don't use it, I've never really seen the attraction, mostly just acquaintances bragging about their lives or fishing for compliments. I do envy the private jokes I miss out on with friends or the handy way of sending/receiving info on parties etc, but frankly it scares me that people can just know your name and look you up.
When I meet someone who doesn't use it I almost think "Thank God, someone normal!".
But it seems whenever I tell someone I don't use Facebook, they look at me and think I'm some sort of weirdo/loner.
Everyone always seems to be complaining about how crap it's become, but it doesn't stop people using it!
Will social networking ever die down so I can be seen as normal again?!
And why do you use Facebook?

What's it like having no friends?

Its a good way to stay in touch with my mates that have upped sticks and left for oz. Its also good for seeing pics mates have from holidays. I don't add someone unless I have their mobile number, otherwise I'd end up with a bunch of fukcwits I've barely talked to.

Good to see you fit the bill.

Just to clarify; I'm obviously not bashing people who use Facebook, I'm just curious to know what people think when they find out someone doesn't use it.

I don't use Facebook myself nor any member of my family.
I don't care whether anyone uses it or not.

What the feck? It's only a website, what's the point in getting so hyped about it?

there's privacy setting so people cant get right on your page plus you dont have to use your real name

people come and go from these site in droves, remember Bebo?
facebook will go the same way in a few.

There is email, gmail, Skype, Viber and MSN for years that did all that before Facebook. FB is not the be all and end all most people think it is.

Personally couldn't care about people's pics of what they get up to tbh.

I don't use Facebook. I looked at it and their privacy policies about five years ago, and thought "you what?!?", and that was case closed. None of my real-world friends are on there, either - they're working people, the whole thing went under their radar. We are using LinkedIn for professional networking.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

yup - it's handy for keeping in touch with people you might not necessarily see much of...that you like. you do get landed with a bunch of assholes who do talk s'hite unfortunately but that's the trade off.

Im not on FB and i never want to be. Why in gods name do people put up personal stuff for the world to see.. "oh well you can block what people can see" is the answer i get, yet they have countless people added as "friends" who they wouldn't talk to if they met them on the street.

Because it's everywhere now. On posters, ads, radio ads. Cinema movies and video games, even some online e-tailer only operate through crappy FB. It's a pain in the hoop.

You have a FB account just to send messages? MSN and Gmail chat do the same thing with less hassle, even Skype.

Not on it either. No interest at all.

Most people usually ask why not and I just say I don't like it and they look horrified and slowly back away.

the popularity of facebook baffles me, not only was there all that stuff you mention but there were loads of social networking sites just like facebook BEFORE facebook such as bebo, myspace, wayn

you would swear facebook created something new or reinvented the wheel

Lol same for me, they back away in horror as if I said I don't have genitals, it's just Facebook dammit!

I've heard of people who practically stalk someones Facebook, find out where they're headed out to that night and purposely go to "bump into them". I know the majority of people don't do this but the fact that it's so easy to do makes it scary to me.

I use it and think it's great I am a member of a triathlon club, and the club use facebook put up times for training sessions, changes in training, club things and photos of people in the club doing triathlons. It's just handy for chatting to people, It also can be funny for slagging people off.

I had a facebook account for six months before I deleted it. In real life, I'm not in contact with 200 'friends' and I'm not really better off knowing their thoughts or feelings from day to day.

It just eats up time, and for what? If I like people enough I'll make proper contact with them. If I like people enough I'll let them know me properly.

Best thing I've done recently was get that time back and step away from facebook.

This thread probably reminded everyone who uses it to log back on haha!

I use it, its great for sharing photos and cheaper way than calls and texts for keeping in touch, its also a less formal way of keeping business contacts open.

I actually heard a girl say to her friend the other day 'OMG, I put a thing up on my fb about what happened in college the other day and I have already got, like, 41 thanks and I only put it up on Tuesday.'

    :confused::(:rolleyes::(

WHAT!!!! You use it? Get the hell outta here. Don't you have to go poke someone or something?

There are all those, but tbh most of the alternatives are stand alone, which may do the specific service better, fb does them all quite well in a relatively neat package. I know its not the be all and end all, but it seemed to come along at the right time to get maximum exposure and a huge following, hence its the most convenient medium for staying in touch as most my mates use it.

I guess we'll have to disagree on the second point, but I'm interested in photos of my mates on holidays.

I know quite a few who don't use facebook at all. Not everything is going to suit everyone. I also know people who just can't grasp or even like discussion forums like boards. They just can't get their heads around it, and meh! That's just fine imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,331 ✭✭✭✭bronte

I know quite a few that don't bother. BF thinks it's the work of the devil and won't touch it....friend of mine is on it but constantly saying they're shutting it down cos it's a pain in the arse. I do use it...not as much as I used to but it's probably the quickest way to get in touch with my brother back home. He's never off the thing. It's also useful for staying in touch with folks who have gone travelling etc. It's not good if it starts to replace spending "actual" time with mates though.

I think it was when I saw these "wetser" groups and "shifting" pages pop up that I started hating it. Awful.....
Also, the people who have photo fever... bástards

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,428 ✭✭✭MysticalRain

Never bothered with it myself. I waste far too much time on the Internet as it is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,778 ✭✭✭Big Pussy Bonpensiero

Love fb. You have way more friends and know a lot more people. Also, if you're ever stuck for something you can just ask on fb. Great for chatting as well, and creeping. With everything it has it's drawbacks, but I wouldn't have been invited to half the parties had fb not existed.

And lol at the people here calling it a waste of time, that's fair enough if you don't use the Internet in your spare time, otherwise it's just hypocritical.

Mrs Aido, has a FB account and the minute she wakes up she is on it on either her on my phone,

She has shown it to me a couple of times (her FB profile..That is :D) and I don't really see the appeal. Of a load of wingers moaning on about how ****ty their lives are or thier kid just farted.............. A load of Ball Cox. And herself is friends with my mates on it too.

However her in doors has tried to convince me to set up my own account on FB, and I have taught about it, even typed it into the PC, but can not bring myself to go that little bit more and enter my info...............

All my family are on it, even the ould man and he is 60 odd,

No its not for me, I don't want to broadcast my life to a meaningless bunch of nobodies.

Off now to check FB :) NOT IN A MILLION YEARS.

I'm on Google Plus. I have a facebook account but I don't use it. I realised I couldn't give a **** about most of the people on there, at least not their daily thoughts. I see them a couple of times a year anyway and it's great to catch up then because you actually get to hear what's important. I use Google Plus for a few people I see regularly, but mostly for people I know through the internet. It's nice to see what they think about when they don't structure things for forums. And Google Plus is much easier to organise and use.

Are you serious? "you have way more friends......." or are you Jedward?

"I wouldn't have been invited to half the parties had fb not existed"

Hint:.... if you were in anyway a 'real' friend or really important to the host you wouldn't have needed a fb invite you'd have been invited in person or at the very least over the phone! ....a farcebook party invite is like an "I'll invite them but hope they don't come" invite :D

You know the saying "It's quality not quantity that counts" - not just a line used by lesser endowed men :pac:

"Creeping"? now that just sounds like something that an Ex does!
