Have you tried something like a Boyds stock. Check out their website. Surely some dealer can import one for you.

What model and calibre of marlin is it ?
I have a boyds thumbhole on my cz varmint which only cost 110 euro delivered to my door.
They do make them for marlins but dont know if they make them for all models.

I was looking at the boyds website and they do make thumbhole stocks for the 800 and 900 models and they do mention the 917 on the tech data.
Drop them a email and ask them about your rifle.

A custom stock would be an expensive route to take for a standard rimfire rifle, it would be cheaper to change the rifle.

You can try this, but it comes from the US.

If not better find a dealer in the UK or elsewhere in Europe.
I am sure there is someone who makes one.:D

Shrug - it's hard to fly with eagles when you're a turkey. If you want these non-standard things then you gots to be prepared to pay non-standard prices . Nobody said that shooting anything was a way to stay wealthy.;) In any case, I'm not convinced that one of the fine Irish stock-makers couldn't do a job on a store-bought stock - I seem to recall seeing a VERY fine stock on this site made by somebody who was NOT a stock-maker at all.

I always try to stay local. I got my custom .308 made buy an irish gunsmith. But i cant justify paying for a custom stock that will be used for rough shooting in fields. I will probably get a stock from someone online and get it fitted and bedded by an irish builder. Might get trigger changed also.

Can you not attempt to adapt the stock yourself ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 879 ✭✭✭zeissman

I bought a boyds uninlet thumbhole stock and my mate fitted it to my sako 85.
They come shaped on the outside only so the barrel channel, action, bolt, and trigger etc have to be cut out.
He made a great job of it and it cost very little.

Id be all for shopping local and Enda Walsh in my own town, Dungarvan, Waterford does some beautiful work. I was curious before and prices a custom stock off him and if i remember correct it starts at 650 for a walnut stock and then inletting, finnish, bedding, butt plate all come after that.

€110 delivered is hard to compete with.

TommyBoy i emailed boyds about a left handed stock to suit a marlin 917 vs.

    Heres the reply i got.
    Garv,
the evolution and tacticool and rimfire target hunter will work for a left shooter with right hand bolt

alot of the stocks are ambidextrous like this one

    610-545-2T.jpg
again like yourself they didnt clear up would it fit the 917vs

i love the look of endas work but couldnt justify paying that money for a stock that will be abused in a field....

the email i got them didnt answer my question either. i did however just get off the phone with fergal white. he sugested i get an unletted or blank stock from boyds and he would fit it to my action. so problem sorted:D

    thanks to all for advice;)

Worth a look. Looks to be the same type as Richards Microfit I seem to remember something about having the rights in Europe/GB don't know though.

Also heard bad reports about Richards but I've never dealt with them just what I've read on the net.

First they came for the socialists...

    http://www.czub.cz/en/catalog/80-rimfire-rifles-cz/MS/CZ-455-THUMBHOLE.aspx

Or sell the Marlin and get one of the above or a Savage with a thumbhole stock.

At least have a look at costs between upgrading the current setup and buying a new rifle.

I to need help. Bought a cz 455 thumbhole in the summer. I am very happy with it, but I find it a bit heavy, due to the laminate stock and varminet barrel. I have been wondering could a synthetic stock be made for it. Have found numrous companies offering synthetic stocks but none with a thumbhole. I hope you can see my pain.

Take off your stock and weigh it because I dont think the laminate thumbhole stocks are that heavy and think most of the weight is in the barrel.
My mate got a cz 455 varmint and I noticed the barrel is a heavier profile than the one on my cz453 varmint.

fair point zeissman. Is your cz453 a laminate stock also? Its something Im willing to try. Another thing about laminate stocks is they are very nice looking, would hate to rough it to much i.e scrath it or to many dings. So a synthetic stock would be a nice protection, if I ever wanted to sell the rifle on, Id put the original stock back on. My cousin has the same rifle but in 22l.r and it is much lighter than mine (.17hmr).But im not willing to trade firepower for mobiltly. Also I have a 2nd magazine ordered for the rifle, And would like to carry this in the stock a la styer scout instead of in my pocket. Just me been picky and fussy.

My rifle came with a walnut stock and I put a boyds laminate thumbhole stock on it.
The 455 model is fairly new so I dont think anyone is making stocks for them yet but you could try www.staffs-synthetic-stocks.co.uk

Thanks again zeissman. It looks very nice, infact i think Ive found the stock i want:D. Means I have to splash out:(. One small problem, the U.K goverment forbids the export of firearm components outside its borders. But I figure it could be sent to Northern Ireland and got from there. I never would have found that site without your help. They look a pretty serious set up. Do you know any1 who has bought off them?

I dont know anyone who has bought of them but you should give them a call anyway. Take a look at the one ezridax mentioned, it may be for a 452 action but you may be able to fit it to your 455.

Contact SSS directly if the one Sean has is not to your liking or fit. Its either Darren or Derek (i think). I contacted them a short while ago regarding the same stock, (before i seen the one in Seans's) and the guy was very helpful, gave me all the info i needed, prices and ability to ship, etc.

Ezridax my man, if you get down there this friday you can have it, as long as you tell sean to have an other one for sammy to look at the following friday!!! I was toying with the idea of having a stock custom made in ireland, but that could cost more than the rifle and scope. But Il have a look at this one 1st and see what I think then.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,695 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cass

I don't have a CZ anymore so to buy the stock i'd have to buy the rifle too, but just don't have the funds at the moment for that. I'm heading down there today instead so i'll try get a photo and upload it later to see if its the one you want.

Well ezridax, did you get down to the wonderland that is Stakelums, it must be the only shop in Ireland were you can buy guns and hardboard in the one trip:D. The black stock is nice, but I think I might go for the olive green, get the Accuracy International look:). But a custom paint job would be nice, but thats away in the furture, one day at a time and all that.
