    Hi.

    18 Handicap golfer here.
Buying 2 wedges tomorrow. A 54 degree and 58 (or maybe 60) degree.
Thing is, I don't understand the whole bounce thing.
I play on parkland courses. The likes of South County, St Margarets, Sillogue, Rathcore, Deerpark etc...
Can anyone advise what bounce i should be asking for tomorrow? (on both clubs)

    Zak.

More bounce = it bounces off the ground
Less bounce = it digs in

    or something like that

so more bounce for fluffy sand, a little less bounce for not so fluffy sand and less bounce still for lob/pitching wedges is my understanding.

Post here that explains it also:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=71804636&postcount=2.

I have a 62-08 (62 degree, bounce 08) and find I can even use it in bunkers with compacted (usually wet) sand. It does tend to dig into the ground a little at times. It is easy enough to open the face on it and lob the ball high.

It all depends on why you are buying the wedges. Is the 54 degree for use as a gap wedge or a sand wedge? Or both? Is the 58 or 60 purely for use as a lob wedge?

It might be useful to bring any existing wedges that you have with you tomorrow (even pitching wedge) as that might help determine the degree of loft that you could look at in order to keep the gap between each wedge the same.

It might also be worth just buying one wedge tomorrow and see how you get on with it.

My PW is 44 degrees, my GW is 49....
So the 54 would be my SW and the 60 would be my LW.
I use my current (ancient) SW on the fairways a lot.
Use it for short chips just off the green.
LW for when i need to get some quick height.

My wedges are 56*11 and 60*4.

4 is probably a bit low but works fine for me. I wouldn't get less 10 for a sandwedge(54 or 56).

Do you mind me asking why you need all of those wedges?

Lots of people play with 4 wedges, they're scoring clubs

Yes, a lot do. And quite a few don't. I asked the OP the question because I doubt that the reason he plays off 18 is because of a lack of full swing options from inside 130 yards.

If he carried 6 of them would he play even better?

Probably not when he has to leave the driver and 3 wood out of the bag :D

why not stick to the Op's opening question maybe Osgoodisgood?

Plenty of time later for you to start a condescending thread about higher h'cap golfers.

I bought some clubs earlier on in the year which went as far as a GW. (49 degrees)
Someone lent me a 60 degree LW which I love.
So I want to buy one for myself.
It's just a very big gap between 49 and 60. A SW would fit in perfectly.

    zak

ps: my short game is by far the strongest elemet of my game.

Zak Flaps, no need to justify your use of 4 wedges. Let's face it 99% of the pros have at least 3 wedges and a good number of them have an extra one in the bag (including big Phil, possibly the best short game player in the world over the last 10 years).

I use 4 wedges. Gives me more options around the green and allows me have different loft / bounce combinations at my disposal.

Keep up the good work with your short game and best of luck with your new wedges.

Cheers Praf. Did a little research today on bounce etc....gonna purchase in the morning....might get the guy in the shop to have a quick look at my swing, so he can recommend what bounce I'd need on the clubs.

If you are buying a 54 degree I would suggest you would get more use of the 60 degree or 62 rather than the 58. Its easy to open the face of the 54 a few degrees to make it a 58.
As an observation, many high-handicappers use too much loft around the green much of the time and would learn more control of the ball if they got it rolling much earlier

I dont know much about bounce etc, but i use a 52 degree and a 60 for those awkward shots that leave you little green to play with, use my 52 religiously, anything from 100 yds in and in and around, both TM TP Z Wedges, love em
