Supporting a terrorist organisation does not make you a republican. How are you confused???

The GFA was voted for by the people.

    How do you define Republican?

I would personally say that anyone who supports the vision of a 32 County Democratic Irish Republic should be considered an Irish Republican.

FF didn't support the Provos just like Sinn Fein now don't support the dissident groups, doesn't make either party less Republican in my view.

This is a pointless thread. The word "republican" is among the most abused in Irish political life. Just google it and see how confused the debate is.

I cam across this quote on Wikipedia:

"David Wootton, for instance, argues that throughout history the meanings of the term republicanism have been so diverse, and at times contradictory, that the term is all but meaningless and any attempt to build a cogent ideology based on it will fail."

I think it accurately describes republicanism in Ireland.

depends how you define republic tbh. Is a republic a free democratic and just society or does it also apply to corrupt self serving pandering to vested interests at the expense of the general population. Does a republic have standards?

Most countries who make a transition from an old system to become a republic have certain progressive ideals which define that new republic, we frankly didn't. We took a step backwards and created an ultra conservative priest ridden nation propped up by rural cults. Our leaders were directed by church and vested interests rather than led the building of a new republic. Our definition of republic was basically it's perfectly ok to strangle a population once it was Irish men doing the strangling and a tri-colour flew over government buildings.

Any discussion on republicanism which doesn't define what our republic actually is is irrelevant whether its a discussion on 26 or 32 counties.

IMO FF are an anti-republican party because I believe a republic should be transparent and accountable in the decisions it's leaders take. Thats just my opinion though, some people would regard a republic simply as having a popular vote to elect parish pumpers to a corrupt system. Personally I'm still awaiting the first Irish republic, either the 26 or 32 county kind.

On boards .ie Republicans are people who support the idea of the armed struggle for a 32 county (from a very long distance), They also vote SF, head to Celtic Park and sing stupid songs about other people, they are mostly in the mid 20's and know as much about N Ireland as my "you know what" knows about space aviation.

They will have a view that there never was or is a republican who was not a member of SF
