Animals that Eat Humans - Does It Disturb You?

I was out with my mates last weekend and somehow we got around to the subject of man-eating animals. You know the kind - sharks, lions, bears, crocodiles and giant snakes.

We agreed that deep in the human psyche, evven though we are (or like to think we are) the dominant special of animal on Earth and top of the food chain, there is a primal terror at being eaten, especially eaten alive and this might stem from when we were less evolved forms of apes.

I mean, the idea of being swallowed whole by a gaint python ot becoming the lunch of a great white shark is not exactly a pleasant thought, is it?

If I'm the meal then, yes, it does bother me.

While I can't say I'd like to be eaten alive, if I wander into the habitat of a python/bear/shark/lion/man-eating chicken, I won't moan if it happens. I eat meat, so fair's fair.

pretty much sums it all up, if that cow ever got the chance he'd eat you and everyone you care about!

We should start up a Facebook campaign to stop other animals eating us.

I wouldn't say I'm disturbed by it, but then I don't think I've ever been in a situation where I was at risk of been eaten so the natural tendency to be ever wary of that has been reduced somewhat. If a lion started to gnaw at my trembling body then I may well see it as disturbing.

Animals will join it too, then when we all check in at the watering hole, the murdering hoards of antelope and zebra will know where we are and come and eat us. Did you think this through at all??

I'd like to think I'd die fighting. Sure might as well make them work for their supper.

This poor unfortunate cameraman apparently became the next dinner of the huge anaconda he was filming.

Yep - people get eaten from time to time too.:(

Deep in the human psyche is a primal fear of anything that will harm us, whether its a scumbag stabbing ya in an alleyway or a bear eating you alive. Its all the same, its just fear of being harmed.

Hmmm...had better stick to Plan A so; eat them before they eat us...

It comes from a primal urge of survival thats why you get a sense of fear when talking or seeing visual images of predators that could potentially kill a human. The same comes from a lot of conspiracy theories today, they originate from a deep primal urge to spot and look for potential threats, so even if your brain is wrong or makes up the threat in your head it comes to the conclusion of basically being better wrong then getting killed or attacked.

Does this count as being eaten alive?.. I definitely wouldn't fancy that

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,800 ✭✭✭Aishae

It doesn't matter if im being hunted by a lion or I have a near miss with a car. The dying is the bit that worries me.

The only difference is that the lion is targeting you and the car is an accident. So the chance of death is greater with the lion - extra fear to me

Bears, lions and crocodiles should be no problem, just get yourself one of these guns :D

Tbh honest though if I was out in the wild I'd be more afraid of something like being bitten by a venomous snake.

You should email Jeff Hannemann from Slayer and ask him what he thought of it when he had it.

Its supposed to be a horrible way to go so yes It would bother me! There was a sailor during world war two, who along with his entire crewmates were sunk by a german torpedo. Anyway his mates shipwrecked and afloat were attacked one by one by sharks but the scariest for him was when he said a giant squid pulled down his ship mates one by one. It nearly got him but instead it tore flesh of his leg and left scars up his leg. That always scared me as a kid when I first heard it! a Giant squid eating you would be a horrible way to go!

Most people attacked by animals are in the animals territory, or might have spooked the animals. As such they're fair game.
The only animal that actively hunts humans for food is the polar bear. Its not all drinking coke and watching the northern lights with them badboys

People get eaten a lot more than you think in some remote areas of the world.

To be honest, i have a serious soft spot for predators. I do get a little pissed off at people hunting lions and such but i have no problem with battery hens.

I've never heard of giant squid eating people but I'm sure it has happened. They do look like real sea monsters.

This poor unfortunate Playboy bunny became the meal of a giant anaconda snake.:(

No need to worry about lions, sharks and polar bears when a dog could easily rip your face off. Read a story in the star today about a man who was killed by two pitbulls. Gruesome stuff. **** dogs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,564 ✭✭✭✭steddyeddy

Or even worse than death IMO, what about the woman who had her face ripped of by a chimp! These are the animal I would least like to be attacked by!

    Yes. That was shocking stuff.

Being mauled to death by a savage animal is horrible but it just doesn't have the same disgusting feel of being actually consumed and fully eaten by an animal.

I reckon that nature will take her revenge on humankind one day when a new man-eating creature evolves - one that will actively seek out and eat men, women and children to sate its hunger and keep our population numbers down.:pac:

After all, Earth is overpopulated by our species.

Well bacteria, viruses and archea are the dominant life forms on the planet in some ways.

    My interesting fact:
Sharks kill about 5 people a year. We kill 100 million sharks a year.

The fights are hardly fair. If someone wants to kill a shark, they should have to be in the water with the shark armed only with a small knife.

Fail, you should have a pole spear, or maybe a spear gun.

Not at all, we have to try and even up 100 million to 5, so I see no problem with starting off with a small knife with the possibility of progressing to a pole spear. A spear gun would be out of the question given it's a ranged weapon.

even with a rifle something like a grizzly bear would give you some fight, shoot it...wait for it to go down....realize oh s***t it aint going down.....make scary faces :D

if it was me vs a great white i wouldnt want no spear, give me a speed boat so i can get the fcuk out of there any day

Its crazy about about the whole food chain in life. Its can be seen as sick as they way animals eat other animals .. insects eat other insects, fish etc etc. Man is no different. Despite how "advanced" we are.

Why would I be bothered by an animal eating me? Its only a bit of craic sure....

Great Whites and other fercious animals discussed don't actually eat humans. They either

    a. mistake them for something else
    or
    b. take a chunk out to neutralise the threat.

Great Whites in particular mistake humans for seals.

Being mistaken for a seal and getting eaten because of the shark's mistake makes it ok...I can just imagine having my limbs ripped from my body and thinking a sure the thick fcuking shark thinks I am a seal, should have worn my illuminous yellow speedoes instead of this black wetsuit, I wont make that mistake again.

One way or another unless you are cremated (or encased in carbonite) we are all eaten after we die, wouldn't it be nice to become food for a nice cute animal like a lion cub or a wolf puppy rather than for maggots or ants? :)
