Hi, new here so not sure if this is the right place to post so sorry if I'm in the wrong section. I have a 01 Punto about 2 months now. Haven't drove much as I'm a learner. I was driving today, started to hear a winding/humming noise and stopped in traffic, went to go and the car was dead. Thought it just cut out but when I turned the key nothing happened. Also the needle on the speedometer was stuck between 20 and 30 mph and didn't drop. I was told if I heard a winding noise it was the alternator or fan belt. But mechanic said it's the starting motor. Anybody ever have a problem like this? Just don't wanna get a new starting motor then have the same thing happen and find out it's one of the other two after all. Any advice welcome.

    Thanks, Martin.

It is possible that the starter motor never disengaged when you started the car, which would cause the noise. If the starter motor is kaput then it'll need to be replaced anyway.

Yep, I was roadside for 45 mins to an hour. Kept trying to start it but no luck. Lights didn't even come on.

What is the mechanic going to do?.Bit of a long shot, but maybe the starter jammed with the flywheel after it was started before, and overheated. If thats not the case and you dont have ignition lights the starter is unlikely to be getting power.Your man should try to see will the starter run by bridging the solenoid terminals, or run a temporary wire to the activating part of the solenoid to check to see will it turn over.
