problem renaming files

When I try to rename a file e.g. excel or word I get an error message "If you change a file name extension the file may become unusable, Do you want to change it?"

This is very annoying as I need to alter the file names regularly for work and up to recently I didn't have this problem.

Anyone know why I am receiving this message

    Thanks

Does this happen with all file types or just the MS Office programmes you mention? Are you just right clicking & hitting rename or another method? Have you tried opening the file then using "save as" to create a new renamed copy?

Make sure you are only renaming the files name, and not what is after the . (dot)

EG: with a file called Myfile.xls you only highlight and rename Myfile
the .xls part should remain untouched :)

Are you hiding the extensions of known file types? Have a look in folder options in windows explorer. When renaming files from, say "abc.doc" to "def.doc" you may have to specify the file extension also.

The real reason you get asked is that it's fairly rare to need to change the extension to a file name and Microsoft assumes that anybody who does this may be doing so in error. Or that theyre an idiot. ;-)

Thanks for your reply, yes its just MS office Programs, and yes I always have used right click and rename, I never had a problem with this before.

I have just tried the save as option, it converted it to a Microsoft Open XML C file (whatever that is!), this is a nuisance because I rename up to 100 files per day and also I forward them on to a designer who uses MAC only and I cant afford the files to be converting like this

CaSCaDe711, Thanks a million, you are right, I tried renaming before the .(dot) and it worked

    Thanks again

there are utils to bulk rename files

    command line is also good

or you could check if the program has an option to change the default save as option - it's the first thing you do with micorsoft office change .docx to .doc , .xlsx to .xls and so on
