Becoming an Airline Pilot?

Just wondering if anyone has any information on the best route to becoming an Airline Pilot? I had hoped to apply for the BA Recruitment Scheme but because I'm only doing my leaving cert this year, I wasn't eligible.

As I don't fancy spending 100k on private training and then waiting around hoping for an airline to take me on, does anyone know if the likes of Aer Lingus (etc) will be recruiting again in 2012? Also, do you need to already have a PPL to apply for their scheme? Bare in mind, the only flight experience I have is Flight Simulator X.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

I had a similar thread the other day, so just letting you know the info i'm 100% about.

Regarding Aer Lingus, no one knows for sure if they will run the programme again next year, but like yourself i hope they do. You don't need a PPL to apply, but i imagine it would help, I think that would cost about €10K thats what i saw from one of the Irish schools anyway.

You have age on your side, so i'd recommend applying next year if they run it, but crack on yourself getting your liecence yourself in the meantime. Sounds like Money isn't growing on trees for you like it's not for me so you could also get a job aftre school and fund your own part time training and you'll get there in the end that way if no programme takes you own. I'm 27 and only starting out, but you a lot younger so it woould take a few years but you'd still be young.

Read through the Aer Lingus cadetship thread and one of the 'becoming a pilot' threads. The info is there. Also check out PPRuNe particularly the wannabees forum.

You don't need a PPL but don't let that stop you getting one if you really want to fly as opposed to 'becoming an airline pilot'.

No one knows if Aer Lingus recruits again next year, not even Aer Lingus.

Incidentally you don't have to pay 100k, 60/65k will suffice.

Yeah, I plan on starting doing a few lessons this year. Do you have any knowledge on whether or not the Air Corps would be a good way to go?

Also, not sure if this is a myth or what but someone said that there's a height restriction for pilots. It's kind of worrying seeing as this is my dream job but I'm nearly "6ft 7".

    Air Corp will not recruit.

Your height may be an issue.

Can you fit inside a pa38?

Hopefully, they'll be running another programme. Well, I'd be willing to pay money (60k+) if it meant I was training with an Airline. I just don't want to go to somewhere like Atlantic and be back on here in 3 years looking for a job, you know? Would prefer Aer Lingus as well cause it gives me the chance of being based somewhere in Ireland.

Do you know what Leaving Cert grades they require by any chance? Would a C in honours Maths do I wonder.

Aircorps only recruited 3 cadets this year, but its pretty hard to get in especially when numbers are so limited

Way overpriced for a bull**** course. Stay away!

NFC are doing an integrated course for around €65k and AFAIK they include a MCC.

Compared to PTC you'll save around €30k plus say €5k on the MCC, plus PTC is a modular course anyway but they like to charge integrated prices... With that saving you can buy a Type Rating for Ryanair!

Did my PPL with NFC and they were a great outfit
