A quick question for you guys.

Yesterday we had a count back and tied back 9 back 6 and back 3 back 1.

What is the official rule from here?

    I am also presuming back 6 is 13 - 18 and back 3 is 16 - 18

    Thanks

There is no set way to resolve ties and different clubs can apply different countback methods but generally speaking it is done by:

Back 9, Back 6, Back 3, Back 2, Back 1 then individual scores from the 9th backwards. i.e keep going back one hole at a time from holes 9 to 1 until there is a difference. If that fails to resolve toss a coin. ;)

Played one or two opens where the countback was done one hole at a time, following the index (i.e. best score on index 1 wins, if tied move to index 2, and so on).

I always thought it was back 9 then 6 then 3 followed by front 9, front 6 then front 3.

    Last 9, 6, 3, 2, 1 then Front 9, 6, 3, 2, 1 then by lot

If you are still tied after back 9,6,3,1 it seems pointless going to front 9 next as they will obviously be the same.

No Dormy - Player A could have finished the front 9; 5, 4 Player B could have been 4, 5.

No, definitely not. I worked on competitions, so I know.

I think what Dormy means is that when back 9,6,3,1 etc is level then no point going to front 9 (as if they are level and have same back 9 they have to have same front 9) you go to front 6.

Clearly if there is a tie for the back 9 then there must be a tie for the front 9. By going to the front nine you start with the back 6 of the front 9 then back 3, 2 and 1 of the front 9.
