I need to get to UCD from the old county road crumlin outside the tesco
I have looked and the 77x is the only bus

The 77x will bring me into town and away from where I'm going, which is a waste of time as it would be quicker to go along the crumlin work near the canal and up to lesson street and get the 46a from there??

    what are my options??

The 17 also will bring you directly to UCD.

It operates along Sundrive Road, Clogher Road, Bangor Circle, and Armagh Road.

Look at the "View Map" button on the link above to see stops and the route.

The only other option is the 18 from Armagh Road to Waterloo Road and 39a from there or 46a/145 from Morehampton Road.

Thanks for the advice, I'll take the 17. How long do you think it will take?

The 17 can crawl as it passes through several potential bottle necks en route (Crumlin Village, KCR, Terenure, Nutgrove, Dundrum, Bird Avenue) plus the usual mix of schools. The timetable allows an hour to get from the terminus to Belfield but it can vary by up to 15 minutes either way. The walk from Old County Road to Leeson Street bridge is the guts of an hour; not an option if you are tight for time.

If I were you, I'd look to go via town on the normal routes (27, 77A, 50, 151) as you have more buses on offer plus bus lanes most of the way as well.

I get on at Cork Street and it's no lie to say that a bus gets me into town in 10-15 minutes from boarding after 9AM. It will be a bit longer around 8AM but you have a bus lane in as far as Christchurch and no cars on College Green at peak hours helps big time. The 46A/39s are very plentiful as well so you won't be waiting too long in and out of town.

The 17 is not quite as bad as you suggest Losty - you're correct that it can crawl at KCR and Terenure, but the rest of the route is fairly clear now with the bus lanes on Nutgrove Avenue and Churchtown Road Upper.

Typically, the 17 will take about 45-55 minutes (depending on what time you are going at) to get from the terminus in Rialto (allow about 5-10 minutes to get to Armagh Road).

OP - the only way you'll find out what suits you best is to try the different options.

Ashleaf is another bottleneck for it en route; on a bad day it can be 10 minutes turning at St. Agnes Road. I had forgotten about the Churchtown corridor but Grange Road and Nutgrove SC itself are still pinch points.

As a local, I personally wouldn't rely on it too much unless OP has some slack times they can arrive in or are willing to be over early each day but yeah, it is very fast off peak.
