Soot Box Or Reducer, Please Help

    Hi All,

I had a multi fuel burner fitted Sept Last year, lit it a couple of weeks ago, made a loud cracking and banging noise in the chimney brest and the black flue from the stove glowed bright red. Havn't used it since and just had a chimney sweep out who advised I need a soot box or reducer and it wasn't safe at the present time. Apparently the soot is falling between the gap of the flue from the fire approx 4" and the chimney flue appox 9". He advised it would be the soot that caught fire causing the noise and glow and a soot box is the best way to sort this out. Does this sound right? I have two small children in the house and am now frightened to use the thing I most wanted in our new house, all I want is us all to be warm, AAAAAAARRGHHHH!!!

Cheapest option would be to have the flue section on the stove replaced with a section which has an access panel and a reducer in the 9" flue. The best option is to have the chimney lined and insulated with a proper cowl on top and an access panel for cleaning.

Reducer it is then!!!! we have an external chimney and a cavity wall so don't like the idea of a soot box going right though and breaking existing flue. We have a 10 year old house so no need for liner apparently as this would make the situation worse????? Can we have a reducer and no access panel ie; flue is cleaned via the fire as we only have about 8" of black flue before it goes into the chimney?
    Thanks for your help.
