So they said in their manifesto.
We will also target energy costs with a view to squeezing the energy companies and the regulator to provide cheaper energy in the coming years in order to tackle fuel poverty.

We can see now that FG lied to us - as evidenced by the latest announcement from the Energy Regulator.

Regulator confirms Bord Gáis price increase

The Energy Regulator has given final approval to Bord Gáis to increase its domestic gas prices by just under 22% from 1 October.

Over the coming years the only people we will see the duplicitous weasels in Fine Gael squeezing will be the most vulnerable in our society.

So we've seen how the Government keep stum when the energy companies significantly raise residential prices but when the ESB refuse to give the department a reduction, Joan Burton springs into action!

Ms Burton's anger at the ESB action was clear in the Dail when she replied sharply to questions in relation to discounts.

"Given all of the reductions other businesses have made, it is more than appropriate that the big utility companies should recognise the difficulty of the economic position the country finds itself in, step up to the plate and offer saving measures to the department.

No fan of Joan Burton but in fairness she's right to look for a reduction in price. The government is their biggest customer and she is responsible for people receiving state allowances towards electricity. If she wasn't looking for reductions she wouldn't be doing her job right imo. Saving the department money is saving tax payers money and it's preventing people struggling from being cut off or getting into debt with the ESB. Frankly it's about time the government start negotiating with it's suppliers to cut costs as opposed to writing blank cheques. Downward pressure on suppliers from big customers happens every day in the real world.

I'm not saying she isn't right to look for a reduction but where was she when Bord Gáis hiked prices by 22% for residential customers?

Ooh come on, its not like Bord Gais just decided to charge 22% more because they felt like making more money.

So they should not pass on gas price increases and run into debt is it? What are you suggesting, and dont say wages because thats a tiny fraction of the price.

ESB and Bord Gáis are in the same boat, so why is it the Government only demands the ESB reduce prices? Why aren't they targeting Bord Gáis aswell?

We knew long before Fine Gael produced their election manifesto that energy prices were on an inflationary path. However the manifesto clearly states that the Government would "target energy costs with a view to squeezing the energy companies" But what they should have said in their manifesto is we will only target energy companies to save the department money the rest of you can go to hell.
