Disability Allowance?

I've had a long term mental illness, anxiety/depression. I used to be on disability allowance about 6 years ago, I started to feel a bit better so came off it and took on work.

Well I haven't been doing to well lately, I've only started college again the other day, and I'm having severe anxiety attacks and depression.

What's the procedure of going back on the disability allowance, do I go to the social welfare first or do I need to go to my doctor?

It's really annoying as I've just paid my fee's and got my back to education allowance sorted. But I'm not able to cope and going back on the sick is my only choice really.

You will have to get the DA application form first, and then get the doctor to fill out the last 2/3 pages at the back of the form. The fact that it is a reacurring ilness should help with your claim. It could only be anexity at starting college that is affecting you and maybe you should give it a week or so at college and see how it goes before you go down that road again. Good luck with it.

Go see your colleges Disability officer. They can be (and were to me) a huge help. They deal with all kinds of health issues so there's nothing really they haven't seen. They can help with an eased schedule for assignments (so if there's a particular busy few weeks they could get assignments spread out a bit better for you.) They might even be able to organise it so you do the course over two years instead of one. Even go see them if you're thinking of dropping out. They might be able to help you get some of your fees back, or defer the year so you could do it another time you feel better. And they can also write supporting letters for DA.

    Thanks

But I'm definitely not in the right frame of mind for college, I rang up today to tell them I won't be back, It's not the right course for me anyway, plus I should be able to get my fee's back.

Aye, fair enough. I know it's tough at times (same thing happened to me.) Even still, I'd go see the disability support officer and make sure they have you marked down as leaving for medical reasons and not that you're just dropping out. That way in the future if you're want to go back you won't have a mark against your name.

hiya .....I suffered with depression for 5/6 years and only have it under control with no medication in last 2 years. ... like you I also started college back when I was early 20s and had to leave very quickly due to anxiety/depression.
.....Heading back now in September as a mature(fossil) student.
Hope you got yourself sorted, time is a great healer! :)

Well I've been off now for nearly a year, I wasn't well at all, but lately things are starting to click into place, basically just over the last few days, i've been feeling better.

Ive been coming off my meds slowly and have knocked the alcohol use right down, really helping.

Here's to a happy and healthy life from now on
