    2 hours is too long.

half an hour max. anything longer affects your sleep at night

I love having them on weekends. Employers should allow employees to have afternoon naps. They're good for you. It's science.

I often fall asleep on the bus on the way home from work, not very restful. always feel tired enough to nap, but yeah I try not to in case it affects my sleep at night.

Yes, yes I can, quite well thank you :D;)

I nap occasionally when I am tired from chasing my toddler around, and being up from 6am to about 12 midnight can be exhausting some days.

Always feel like shit every time I wake up from a nap. Im worse off after it. I find it easier to just stay awake and go to sleep earlier that night

I occasionally have a half an hour nap after a long day to recharge my batteries before the evening but I usually find I'll have a cup of coffee late afternoon which usually does the trick instead.

Although I am slightly jealous the way me Grandma does it who says "I'm just gonna put my head down for an hour so don't call me between 1 and half 3"

Yep! Might have something to do with me most often only sleeping 4-6 hours per night, but that's beside the point.

This reminds me of a study I read about which indicated that some people's natural sleep patterns made them more suited not to one long period of sleep, but two smaller periods. Apparently some people who don't function so well in the morning might be like this, and forcing themselves to adapt to this 'norm' is detrimental to their health.

If you wake up groggy from a nap then you know you probably slept too long. Or you might be getting sick. :(

Pretty much everyday for about an hour. On workdays its usually an evening nap after the gym.

Sometimes on my day off I might have a mid morning nap.

I don't understand how people can make it through the day awake.

Many people work nights, or as a waitress I often had shifts from 6-2 and the from 6-midnight, you better believe I napped from 3-5.

Also being unemployed causes depression, depression often leads to a lack of energy and in turn leads to napping.

yeah, i get more than 8 hours sleep every night and could still sleep before and after work. don't get why people insist you only need 8 hours, it varies between people.

No, I can't nap. I can never actually get into a deep sleep unless it's night time. And besides, it's sort of girlie really to need a nap isn't it?

Yeah, the bad nap is a killer all right. Sometimes you wake up feeling more tired and irritable than before your nap! I find it's worth the risk. I'm fond of an early-evening, after dinner nap myself.

Yep, when I try napping I just feel groggy and get headaches. Be it half an hour, an hour, no matter how short or long.

There is some science behind this and it is different for every person.

If you just want a quick refresher nap, then 20 minutes is about the max for everyone. Most people go into deep sleep after about that time, from which it is difficult to wake. 15 - 20 minutes would keep you in light sleep and you would wake up refreshed.

If you want a longer daytime sleep the danger is that you wake up mid way through the sleep cycle, and it is that interruption of the cycle which makes you groggy. While you are asleep you go through deep sleep and light sleep phases, and if you wake up during a deep sleep phase you feel crap. Everyone's sleep cycle is different, but if you have an iphone there is an app which will tell you what it is - you put the phone on your bed and it monitors when you move. So once you know your sleep cycle, you can plan your afternoon snooze length, and wake up when you are out of deep sleep and back into light. Then you will wake up feeling refreshed and not groggy.

(researched all this as a senior club athlete and coach - people get nervous and tired through the course of race days, and often want to snooze. Last thing you want to do in that situation is wake up wrecked, as you'll then perform badly, so the maximum sleep I allow at the track is 20 minutes)

Edit: and incidentally, afternoon naps are proven to improve cognitive function

    I cannot sleep until sunset

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,571 ✭✭✭Aoifey!

Even just a 15 minute nap can help me if I'm absolutely wrecked during the day. If I'm going all day and meant to go out that night I'll often crawl into bed for a nap around 6 or 7 and get up again about 8 or so.

I finish work and have around an hour to wait for my kids to come out of school before we drive home. I keep a pillow and a small blanket in the car. Nothing like 40 winks in the afternoon.Though if the weather's good I do prefer a walk. Yeah, a power nap is a great thing!

If I'm going out on a Saturday night and I play football during the day I'll have a little kip around 4 or 5, other than that a nap is a big no-no for me cos I won't sleep that night

Usually only have them at the weekends when i'm hungover or heading out on a mad one that night. Never during the week tho as they ruin my sleep.

    This.
Unless I'm dog-tired from having little or no sleep the previous night, I avoid napping...always feel discordant and as if the morning was yesterday or some sort of weird feeling like that. Very disorienting.

I HATE when I fall asleep on the bus, because I wake with a shock, thinking I've missed my town. It doesn't help that the motorway is completely devoid of landmarks, so I'm usually left all panickey, wondering if I haven't made it home yet, or if I'm on my way to Rosslare.
