    Hey all.

Just a quick question... down the road (probably a year or two, if not a little longer!) I'd love to have a classic car.

I love the look of the Capri, but quite honestly I'm not very knowledgeable on classic cars. What else from the 70's and 80's era would have that type of shape? As daft as it sounds, I think I'm partially drawn to it for the fact that it's always seen close by rule-breaking cops in older movies :D

Anyways! What else from those decades would look slick (in a retro sense) as well as being nice to drive?

    Here you go:

    i118495.jpg

Classic 70's TV bad boy cop Van der Valk's sweet ride of choice; A Daf 55 panda car. You could get a perm to complete the look.

    Alternatively:

Already have the perm. Now I just need the car and canary yellow suit.

In terms of that exaggerated coupe shape, you're lookin at either a manta or capri if you want something that's easily available in Ireland or the UK.

If you like the Manta, then you might consider a Vauxhall Firenza:

Some nice suggestions here but we're all just posting random stuff from the 70's & 80's that we personally like regardless of budget. If you can give us a ball park then we can post random stuff from the 70's & 80's that we personally like that will at least be in your budget.

Also max engine size, coupe, saloon, hatch, etc? Whatr's the preference.

Finally as a second car you should strongly consider ruling out anything less that 30 years old as you will pay full tax as opposed to €48p.a. and maybe also rule out anything post 1/1/80 as they are not NCT exempt.

Ah like I said in the opening post, it's only to get me thinking for down the road about maybe 2-3 years, if not a little more. As when I have a house (rented or bought) with a garage, it'd be nice to have something to work on in the meantime.

My #1 concern is still getting a Honda S2000 (boo hiss) around December or January, but this will be nice to look forward to and to plan for.

I would imagine probably a 3k budget, no max engine size (if it's gonna be older than 30 years old), and coupe shape.

Most of those are out then - you'd be in 924 or maybe rough Datsun 260 territory. The newer shape Manta would be within budget too:

    Agreed,

    924
    944
    Capri
    260
    Manta

You should really look at stretching the budget to cq. €5k and getting one in better nick - you will be way better off in the long term doing it this way.

    Righto we'll say €5-6k :)

I'm guessing that classics would need to be kept garaged all the time when not in use, would that be right?

Also does insurance tend to work out reasonable as a second car? Or do the older big engines (2L+) get hammered as much as new big engines?

And are older cars fairly handy to do work on?

Much better! ;) Although that doesn't really open up a whole lot more cars to you than mentioned above but should get you a very clean example.

    Definitely

Around €250p.a. fully comp is the norm. I pay that on a 6.6.

Normally yes, less stuff to go wrong, not a whole lot of electrics, etc. Will need regular maintenance though and also favour regular use.

Consumption wouldn't bother me, if I had €4k to spare I would be knocking on his door this evening.

It wouldn't bother me either in a classic but there is no need to hype it up to that degree

my three litre Cortina with the same engine and a four-speed would do that MPG on a run so it not that far off...depends how you drive it.

Same engine in the Scimitar, fibreglass body so no rusty sills and a lot cheaper than the others. Well undervalued so you can pick up a top notch one for what you'd get an everage example of the others. But the looks are like marmite , I love them but lots hate them.

For good value, ease of maintenance, good looks, sheer magnetism and cheap running costs has to be the Capri....but then i am biased !!:D But smilies apart it is the best option..I drove one for years, rarely gave me any trouble, and was a lot of fun as well, just beware of wet roundabouts ! Stuff like the Quattro , while very, very nice, will cost a fortune in repairs or maintenance.

Plenty of good examples are available in the UK at reasonable money, Manta's, Magnums or the Datsuns are fairly rare here and in the UK and as such can be expensive, Whereas there are plenty of Capris out there and some fine examples well within your budget.

But like I say I am biased, having owned them since 1983....:D

Practical Classics have a three way test this month between the Capri, Manta and Starion along with a feature on the MK1 Golf GTi. Might be worth a read.

I'd have a Scimitar over a Capri any day, but it's pretty far from the bad boy cop car brief - or even the affordable coupe territory (who ever saw a bad boy cop in a 924!?). Unless you're suggesting the GT?
