    Hi guys,

Looking at a swift GLX soon. Private sale.

Only thing is, I'm not a huge car person.

How do I know it is a GLX I am looking at and not a GL?
Is there a defining feature that would tell me?

If this is a stupid question, sorry

    irish

GL has steel wheels with plastic wheel trim, electric front windows, remote central locking, multi-function steering wheel and electric mirrors.

GLX adds alloy wheels, front fog light and air conditioning.

    Thanks man,

ya, I am gonna look for the foglights.
That is the easiest to spot

    Thanks

Look for the air con button in the centre console. Fog lights and alloy wheels can easily be added aftermarket. There are a few Jap imports about too, majority of these tend to be higher spec 1.5 litre autos though.

I had a look at different dashes on google images but I can't see a air con button.
    Will it be very obvious?

Here it is, in between the heat and fan speed controls:

    You legends.
I used Homer's advice and yes, it comes up as the one alright!

Thanks for the nice picture too Rovi.

Now I just hope the car has nothing wrong.

Great cars by the way. Bought one new in 2007 and sold it this year. Drove everywhere in it and never a moment's trouble. Make sure the two recalls have been performed on the car. One was for the boot light trim and the other for the rear seatbelt anchors. Nothing major apparently but better to make sure they were done. Suzuki would have a record if the owner doesn't.
The stereo is great on these cars and the fuel economy is good too. Regularly got over 47mpg and once got 55mpg on a run to Galway.
    Best of luck.

    Thanks for that advice Miscreant.
    Car is for my wife.

Will there be a record of some sort re the recalls if the owner got it done or do I have to check the reg with suzuki?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,319 ✭✭✭Miscreant

The owner should have a record of it as long as they kept the docket when the recall was done. Failing this then their Suzuki garage will be able to confirm. Mine were done when the car was in for a service so if the one you are looking at has a main dealer history then you should be OK as the situation should be the same as mine.

    Appreciate the advice :)

    You are welcome.
Where is the car by the way and what colour is it? Mine was a gun metal grey metallic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,830 ✭✭✭irishproduce

    Its black, in Dublin.
Going up to look Fri and will decide then during the week and hopefully might take it next week.
Googled the gun metal colour, nice colour but i'd say the colour adds to the expense of it!!
Ones with stripes on them seem cheaper but for obvious reasons!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,319 ✭✭✭Miscreant

Yeah, the stripes were an extra would you believe, those and the white roof.
Not sure if they are painted on or not. If it is just plastic you might be able to peel it off to get the car back to plain black.
Best of luck with it anyway, if it is a good one then your wife will not be disappointed.

Hopefully it will work out for a second hand car.
She will only keep it for about 6 months.
Just had a baby in June and wanted a qashqai but we can't afford one so we are hoping to save a bit over the coming months and get closer by next Summer (Provided still working of course) :o

I have a Swift 1.3 GLX, its brilliant for use with the car seats I've had. Never had any trouble. I only had the recalls done a few months ago as I only got a letter about them.

Its amazing the stuff I've been able to get into the car as the seats split and fold down and there's pretty high head room.

I bet she'll end up falling in love with it and keep it for much longer. 2 friends of mine drove mine and bough one.

Making me want one now!! :D

Ok, I bought one this weekend, I bought a 07 red GLX one instead!

I completely forgot to ask the owner if the recalls were done.
Are recalls required on 07 models?

The two backseat belts won't retract properly and the one on the left doesn't retract at all.
My own fault, I should have spotted that. There was a baby seat in it so I suppose that was the problem.

Some drive though. really smooth and heavy on the road. Feels quite solid and there is a great clunk off the closing of the doors. Good solid feel in it though!! Half tempted at this stage to try to source myself one :-)

    Congrats on the purchase!
Mine was a 2007 (August) and had the two recalls. Like I said though, they were nothing major and a Suzuki garage or a quick call to Suzuki Ireland will tell you if they were done.
Handling wise, they are a great car. Even surprised a friend who is used to 200+ bhp at how well it went down the road. Took it on numerous trips up North and to Galway every other weekend and never found the car lacking in any department and with 95bhp on tap it is plenty nippy for what it is. Changed up to a Volvo S60 but still have fond memories of my Swift.
Best of luck with yours, if you do get one for yourself then have fun :-)

    Thanks Miscreant.
I will ring the local dealer tomorrow.
Will they be able to tap it into the computer or something or will I have to bring it over so they can inspect it?

They should be able to tell by the chassis number whether or not they needed to be done in the first instance and then if and when they were actually done.
Recalls usually affect a number of cars in a numbered series, something like 000025 to 000250 could be affected from a production run. It could be a case that yours was not in the series but should be easy for the garage to look up anyway.

    Thanks for that.
Having a good read over the manual here to see what it has or hasn't.
There are little icons like heater fans on the wing mirrors. Nothing in the book about what the icon means!!

heated mirrors, they come on with the rear demister

That is just a warning that the wing mirror glass is electrically heated, similar system to the rear view window. Handy to have during the frosty winters.

Usually means heated mirrors turn on your rear defrost and see it they heat up

    Thanks lads,

    Who thinks up this stuff!!

After 3 days with the car, i'd recommend driving one.
Nice little car to zip around in!

Electric heated wing mirrors have been around ages. Standard on most cars these days.

Not in the 2001 punto I had.
That yoke barely had a steering wheel.
Search posts under my name for the hassle I had off that thing!

    Coming back on this.
On Miscreant's point about 47 MPG, we did a test recently as the wife thought she was buying a lot of petrol.
If we are right, she is only getting about 30 - 35 MPG.

    This is what we did.
We waited until the petrol light came on and went to a petrol station less than a mile after the light came on.
We put in 10 litres and reset the clock. Now we waited until the light came on again.
It came on after 105 KMs.

So I convert Kms to miles and get 65.24 miles.

Then convert litres to gallons and get 2.2 gallons for 10 litres of petrol.

Divide the gallons by 2 to get 1.1 gallons.
Divide the miles by 2 to get 32.6 miles.
My calculation is in this case, approximately 33 MPG.

    Is that a correct calculation?

If so, is that a bad performance, could something be wrong?

Worth noting the drive schedule is about 70% percent city and never 5th gear, 30% in 5th gear on open stretched of road, dual carriage ways.

    Thanks
    irish

That doesn't sound too good, has she been serviced recently? the car, not your wife.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,830 ✭✭✭irishproduce

    Thanks Padma.
I'll check the service history tonight when she is back with the car.

If you are looking to calculate the MPG with any accuracy you really need to do a brim to brim measurement. When the orange light comes on fill the tank until the pump clicks once or twice when full. Drive until the light comes on again and go to the same station and pump and fill up again. This will give you a better measurement.
If you are only getting 33mpg then there is something amiss there (I'm getting that with a 2 litre Volvo) and the car probably needs a good service or even a good long spin if it has been mainly city driving.
I used to take mine regularly to Galway which would stretch it's legs but I did a lot of city driving too. I will see if I can drag up my fuel economy spreadsheet and send you a copy if you like. It has fuel stats for every KM I did in mine.

    Thanks Micreant.
I checked there. She was serviced last in June of this year.

Can you explain how I would measure the mpg if I filled it after the light comes on?
I don;t understand the part about going back and filling it again.
    Thanks

To get a better idea of your MPG you should always start with a full tank (brimmed). Zero the trip meter on the car and drive as you normally would do until the light comes on. Fill up (to the brim) again and take note of how much fuel you have put in. Divide the number of miles by the number of litres and this will give you a miles per litre figure. Multiply this figure by 4.54 and this will give you the miles per gallon.
I just checked my figures there and the absolute worst I ever got from my Swift was 34Mpg. Usually I was into the mid 40s and once I even hit the mid 50s on a long run at 90kph.
My driving style could be described as fairly relaxed as I don't see the point in rushing around but sometimes I like to stretch the car's legs and blow off the cobwebs, so to speak. Perhaps your Swift is doing more town milage than mine did. :)
