    Hi,
I have narrowed my choice down to these 2. They are both 1.6 diesel engines and both 2011 demo models. I don't have kids just myself and so a small bit of driving with my work.
I can't separate the cars so any help is appreciate.
    Thanks

I was looking at both myself bad points with the Auris are the boot is tiny because the rear arches take up so much space and I don't think I could get used to that high handbrake. Both in 2011 it would have to be the Golf, if it was the Mk5 Golf I'd be inclined to go with the Auris for the level of comfort for the driver but the Mk6 is a big improvement.

Golf would be my pick. The Auris has a terrible interior imo.

    What spec is the Golf??

As for the boot if I owned a Auris I would spend most of my time in it.. :)

How is the Mk 6 Golf such a big improvement over the Mk5?

I've driven quite a bit in an Auris (2007 model).

    The Auris:

Plus: It has been driven very hard by its owner (not me) and it has never ever given a days bother. It has definitely lived up to the marketing hype of Toyotas being reliable. The cabin is well laid out, roomy and imo looks nice.

Minus: The car feels very unresponsive, the clutch and gears feel cheap and stiff and the ride is not very comfortable. The cabin, whilst looking nice is flimsy as heck with cheap, rattly plastic. You also sit quite far back from the windscreen and quite high up so it almost feels like a van rather than a hatchback. In addition, visibility is quite poor.

I really wouldn't recommend one if you like driving as it's in no way engaging. It really feels toy-like imo. Might sound like a strange way of describing it but it just doesn't feel like a car. That said, I've no doubt it has its fans and resale values seem to be decent. Try one out and see if you like it.

Edit - apologies, I misread your post and didn't see the diesel bit. I've only driven petrol.

I'm open to correction, but isn't the Auris only available in a 1.4 diesel? Or are you buying from the UK?

Sorry I'm really bad at spec's and stuff.
The Golf is a Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI 5dr Trendline (2011)

And the Auris is a Sport Model .

Thanks guys, I really am crap at all the little bits

Better stereo, nice dash display, air con as standard, (this was also in some of the later mk5s)

    Just curious but why.

Can't say I noticied much difference in driving but whats really swaying me is the VW finance scheme at German rates bout 5% interest difference!!!

The auris is outclassed in every way.

Also consider the ceed and I30, both of which incidentally are better than the Toyota

Does power matter to you ???

The bog standard golf is underpowered if you ask me. The 1.6tdi comes with either 90bhp or 104bhp. To be honest I feel both are a bit underpowered but I like a bit of power - but I would say the 90bhp definitely a noticeably sluggish thing to drive even if you aren't too pushed about power.

Anyhow - that may be something that matters to you or not - but just pointing it out

I don't know about the Auris power wise

Auris for me. I think the new golfs are going to start showing there soft side soon. One thing about the Auris it will go forever.

I presume the 89 in your name refers to DOB? If your 22 years old the Golf might be a bit more suitable.

If I had to choose one of those two then it would probably be the Golf but the Trendline model is a pretty baron place to be in.

I would not limit myself to those two, I'd be looking at these also.

    Wouldn't touch either of them.

    A 1.4 90bhp diesel vs a 1.6 100bhp diesel.

    Come on man;)

Have a look at the new Mitsubishi Lancer diesel. You'd get it kitted out with side skirts, alloys, rear spoiler, painted brake calipers, bonnet scoop etc for 22k.That,s what he offered me down from 24.5k

It basically looks the same as this.

    Mitsubishi+Lancer+2010.jpg

It's a 1.8 diesel, 150bhp, loads of torque, variable valve timing ( first for a diesel ), double overhead cam engine, revs to 5000rpm easily.

I drove it and thought it was a great machine, it was quick and well built. It had the legs on the 143bhp BMW 318D I tried the same day, that's saying alot because the BMW 318d is a 35k car new.

I will be trading in my Mazda 3 MPS for one in few years when they are available used and I have a kid or two:)

It would cost him more to insure that than to buy it

What about an Hyundai I30 ?

    2. Don't think my office would appreciate me driving in, in that monstrosity.
    3. I like my little hatchbacks!!

Opinion guy, have looked at the hyundai, but I'm losing out coz I'm trading in a 07 corolla, oe as 1 sales guy told me a basterisied car coz its neither a corolla or an auris!!!!

The only big issue is its a basic model that I'll be getting, but beggars and all that

OP in his twenties in fairness

I'm in a similar boat to the OP and went from a 1.6 Leon the week after renewing my policy to a vRS diesel for an extra €110. Hardly going to break the bank.

Are you shopping for a car for yourself to drive or your office colleagues to look at?

Don't worry about social circles, for the price range both the golf and the auris would be bottom of my list, both just bland, boring rep mobiles.
The likes of the mazda 3 and especially the lancer diesel(it doesn't look anything like as brash as the evo in the picture) will give you vastly more for your money in terms of driving pleasure, styling(an individual preference of course) and value for money.

Its like a thread answered entirely by car salespeople. The customer is saying she would like a small hatchback and the salespeople are turning around and saying - no you don't want that...what you want is.....

The Golf everyday, and I drive both regularly,

My parents drive a 1.6TDi MK6 Golf Comfortline. And I must say, it really is a good car. The dash is nice, the boot is nice and big, & its great on diesel too. Although, €25.000 is a bit expensive for a Golf in my opinion. If I were to pick, I'd go for the Golf

One little point everyone seems to be missing which may or may not be relevant to the OP....
Check the re-sale values of both cars 3,4 or 5 years...could swing it

    Golfs hold their money...

So do Aurissss'ssss, but that really shouldn't sway you towards either of them.

Giulietta is a fantastic car and should be selling a lot more than it is. New Citroen C4 is pretty good as well, and will give a lot more for the money than the Golf or Auris.

Performance of the Lancer (and you don't have to get the spoiler or side skirts) is very surprising, but it's let down a bit by the interior.

If I was a 25 year old girl, I wouldn't be buying a Grandad car like a basic Golf or any Toyota. I'd have a Mini Cooper, a Mito or an Audi A1.

If you only do small miles, don't buy a diesel.

    No to both IMO.

I dislike the golf but would have it over an Auris, there is nothing likeable at all in them the mother-in-law has one and christ is it terrible.

If i was getting a golf or looking at one i would have to look at the Seat Leon, dash is a bit strange but i prefer the driving and seating position, i dunno feels lower, well for me.

The new Mazda 3 is good, but with all mazda's the interior is very cheap.

But the Guilletta is a real nice place to be. Something just great about that car.
And Italian diesels you know the engine will be ok, the rest of the car in a few years who knows.
