    The BBC text :

"One person was killed and three were
injured in the explosion, following a
fire in a storage site for radioactive
    waste, Le Figaro newspaper said.
The plant is in the Gard region.
It is a major site involved with the
    decommissioning of nuclear facilities,
    and operates a pressurised water
reactor used to produce tritium ."

End of nuclear in Europe because of this ? Germany is commited to closing all of its plants down by 2022 at the moment !

There is a risk of a radioactive leak after a blast at the southern French nuclear plant of Marcoule, media reports say.

French Police say no radiation leak. The green glow around the plant is just a natural flourescence.

I seem to remember a very similar opening statement from the Japanese a few months back and look how that ended.

Look on the bright side. The winds from katia will keep the radioactive smoke away from Ireland. Happy days.

Edit: But push it towards me. Crap.

Apparently this place was a waste management plant, so there are no reactors, and no raw radioactive materials.

There is a water reactor for making tritium.

Maybe if their corporate tax rate was lower, they could've invested more in the safety systems.

    Right, what do we want?

We want another close Marcoule Sellafield campaign. Evil French Brits and their nuclear pollution!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,230 ✭✭✭Solair

Reports from BBC News and CBC News in Canada indicate that there was an explosion at Marcoule nuclear plant in Langedoc-Roussillon.

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2011/09/12/france-nuclear-plant-explosion.html

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44483925/ns/world_news-europe/t/explosion-rocks-france-nuclear-plant-safety-body-says/

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-14883521

    The facts are very confused.

One report is saying that there is no nuclear reactor at the facility, another is saying that there's a PWR on site used to produce isotopes.

We'll know if there was a radiation leak if Sarkozy mutates into an average-size person. :pac:

Thats it....I demand France leave the EU, they just cannot be trusted.

Angela Merkil should go to the nuclear plant immediately and assess the situation.

Those french cant do anything right, first the 1798 rebellion now this...

    Information about the Marcoule facility:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcoule

Open since 1956, similar age to Sellafield.

It contains the MELOX plant which produces MOX fuel and a pressurised water reactor which is or was used to produce tritium. It is unclear if this PWR is still in operation.

It also contains three decommissioned UNGG reactors, which are old gas-cooled reactors similar to the British MAGNOX plants.

I still have them right beside me. They expired about 8 years ago though. Ah shur, thats only a precaution date anyway. They'll be grand.

Nuclear power gets too much of a bad rep. I reckon its all just scare mongering and isn't as dangerous as everybody thinks it is. However, when its in Ukraine! Thats a whole different story. Every thing is dangerous in Ukraine.

Mixed OXide fuel is the dirtiest nuclear fuel there is, it's made from other spent nuclear fuels. The French are the last people to trust in a nuclear accident, when the Russians reported that the projected death toll from Chernobyl would four million plus, the French spat their dummy and had it dropped from the official report. Expect nothing but fudge, waffle and a load of crepe out of them over this.
