Savings while on jobseekers

    Hi all,

Quick question, going unreg for this one.

I was made redundant last week, i've got about €50k in savings. I'm training for a specialised career which requires me to have €70k in savings ( i've already put €30k savings in to it ).

Only option for me to obtain this extra €20k without going in to debt is to look for alternative work while on Jobseekers benefit.

For personal reasons I can't leave the country until next January and I do not want to go in to my hard earned savings just to survive. People have been telling me that I will not be allowed to claim Jobseekers Benefit as a result of my savings being over €20k ?!

Can anyone clarify if there is any truth in this ?

Any savings you have don't affect Jobseeker's Benefit. Anything over 20k is assessed as means on Jobseeker's Allowance.

Thats great thank you very much.

And am I correct in thinking that I am entitled to Jobseekers Benefit for 12 months and if there is no sign of work I am then entitled to Jobseekers Allowance ?

Not sure if this is the correct forum either but I was told I can claim back certain taxes in January 2012 if I dont find employment by then ?

Sorry for the questions I am completely new to this and i've never been out of work :( !
