I very foolishly overlooked the fact that I may have been entitled to FIS while I was working the past 12 months. Does anyone know if and how I can claim back this unclaimed FIS? It would make a world of difference!

Thanks in advance:)

no it only gets backdated from when you first submit your claim

+1......Only from when you applied...

But I didn't know I was entitled...:(

Found this
However, the claim can be backdated for up to 6 months where the person can prove to the satisfaction of the Deciding Officer or Appeals Officer that s/he satisfied the qualifying conditions during that period and that throughout the period there was good cause for the delay in making the claim.

Better than nothing but still, bloody hell. This country...

The worst part is I went in last year to tell them I was starting work on such-and-such a date, which meant my Benefit was no longer available in Post Office, had to wait a week to get it posted, and in the meantime, they didn't mention this FIS to me :(

Well,,based on what you posted there,,it's well worth a go. At the worst, they'll say No,but you'll still get backdated to when you applied.

You have nothing to lose.

Far as I'm concerned, if it's something I was entitled to, and I wasn't told, then I should get every cent. I'm going to fight for it.

It's definitely worth a try but they'll probably claim that it's up to the individual to find out what they're entitled to. Social Welfare is a bit like Revenue in that they don't exactly advertise what you may be entitled to but the information is widely available if you look for it.

I'm in a similar situation in that I had a second child half way throughout my 52 weeks of FIS. Only recently discovered that you can add a child to your claim before your renewal date. I've applied stating that I wasn't aware of this but I don't hold out much hope.

Does it affect the child's mother's SW benefits? We're not together.

Normally you won't get a claim backdated because you did not know of your entitlement. Also if you were successful in getting it backdated, the most it would be backdated is 6 months usually.
As for the child's mother's benefits - if the child is living with the mother, and she is claiming a SW payment for that includes an increase for that child, you won't be awarded FIS. From www.welfare.ie:

A separated parent can apply for FIS once he or she meets the qualifying conditions and

Is living with the children or
Is wholly maintaining the ex-spouse, ex-civil partner or ex-cohabitant with whom the children are living
Wholly maintaining means that maintenance paid by you, the FIS applicant, must be the sole income of your ex-spouse, ex-civil partner or ex-cohabitant.

FIS will only back date a claim 3 months now and afaik claiming you were unaware of the scheme wouldnt get it backdated for you.

If I applied in July and they haven't paid out yet will they still kb date it to time I applied? Also do they tend to start weekly pay before bk dated lump amount or other way round??
