Is there anyway to slow down my internet speed?

I get 10 gb a month with eircom.
Trouble is another girl in the house uses the limit within a couple of days.

Then we have to pay for all we go over and our bill is massive.

She doesn't care, I do . It's my name on the bill.

Is there any way I can max the ampunt downloaded per day or slow it down?

    ThANKS :(

Depending on the router you have it might be possible to limit the maximum connection speed to her IP/MAC address, but frankly I'd be more included to warn her and/or change the passwords and cut her off until she learns to cop the **** on.

    I'm with aidan on this.
If she is using her own laptop and connecting wirelessly then just change your password.
As aidan said though. Tell her to cop the feck on

i take it you can't get UPC in your area as they allow 250gb or 500 depending on the package

You can use the routers advanced settings to cut off her MAC after a certain point. Or you can limit her MAC's download speeds.

And of course there is always the traditional "B*tch, stop hogging all my internets!"

Is the sharing part of an expected service, in a rental contract\agreement etc., or just you being nice?

Why continue with this? ..if it doesn't impact on your relationship, just stop sharing and direct her towards maybe getting her own 3G dongle. She'll soon learn to appreciate the limited amount, access\use of her own bandwidth then..

If only it was as easy as telling her to cop the f*uck on....

She's a friends sister and I only have to put up with her for another two months.

If someone could PLEASE :o explain in layman terms how to slow it down for her on her mac or how to find out how to access her ip no that would be awesome.

Oh the joys of sharing a house

    Couple of questions before I can help you;

What type of router do you have?

Does she know anything about how computers work?

It's the newest router (black) that you get with eircom.

She wouldn't know anything much about computers (I hope!)
Like she can download and use microsoft but she like me she would have to get help for the workings of a computer!

    Thanks a million

Slowing her connection down, or limiting her bandwidth is not something that most basic routers can do. I don't know what one you have, 'black' is not a model or brand of router.

Just check the total useage daily (your ISP should have a service to do this) and then block her completely when she exceeds her portion of the monthly allowance. So if there is two of you and you have a monthly allowance of 10GB, block her when she goes over 5GB.

Obviously monitor your own useage so you can take that away from the total useage to find out what she is using. Do this by installing a useage monitor on your own computer.

You can block her by blocking her MAC address from the router.

Alternatively just charge her 100% of the excess useage charge. Again, you need to monitor your own useage so you can prove it is her that is driving you over.

you can block her access completely by using mac filtering(you can block ip but depending when she connects she could have a different ip from yesterday and you might end up blocking your own smart phone or something)

just change the password and tell her your not sure whats going on :) or tell her, seeing as she has has a mac which means she probably has more money than sense(unless the mac is being used for video/music production)to pay the excess :)

as for somebody above suggesting he should change package why the **** should the op do it when he/she doesnt normaly go over the 10 gig limit??

Eircom went unlimited on some packages last month, check yours.

If the router is near your laptop you just need to buy a Ethernet cable here plug one end in laptop and the other in router you will have full speed, then limit the wireless speed for your friend by

    • Opening internet explorer or whatever you use
    • At the top of the page in the address bar type http://192.168.1.254 press enter
    • Click wireless
    • Advanced Configuration Options
    • Operating Mode 802.11b only
    • Save changes
    • Close window
This will limit all PC and laptops connecting wireless to your router/internet including yours. You can still browse the internet fine on 802.11b but downloads will be very slow. All basic routers will do this.

eircoms unlimited broadband is limited to 250GB read the terms and conditions.

"With Next Generation Broadband Regular you have an unlimited monthly allowance. This is subject to a fair usage policy of 250GB per month"

all isp's have a fair usuage policy.whether or not they enforce it or not is another matter.

to get any where near 250 gig per month you'd have to be downloading a serious amount of movies, games and music!!

Friends sister.....that means nothing. Forward THEM the bills and see how realistic that is then!
Make her charge 100% of excess downloads as it's putting your credentials at risk for her selfishness. Show her old bills if you have them to back up your point. There's no such thing as a free ride; pay half the standard monthly bill and get her to pay whatever's on top of that as well. She'll soon learn her ways. But thankfully you're not on one of the sh!te dongles...would dread to think how much those bills'd cost for going over...

can they do that in terms of consumer law and advertising?

You can still achieve 4 or 5Mb/s over 802.11b.

That's probably their max speed or near enough anyway if they've only got a 10GB limit. It's not going to make any difference.

80 chuffing quids that's how much they charge....15gb limit, went over by about 5gb one month and got charged 80 fcuking euro!

    19.99 for 15gb = €1.33 per gb
    80.00 for 5gb = €16.00 per gb !!!

    Dongle users beware !
