I didn't get a picture of this, but i passed one by yesterday, somewhere in county wexford, i was on my way to waterford so honestly i've no idea where i actually was, outside enniscorthy is as close as i can pin it down.

i was on a stretch of single carriageway but it was a major road with a 100km/h limit and a hard shoulder. so parked up in the hard shoulder was a D-Reg mondeo, totally standard looking with a very small camera poking out of a flap on the top of the bootlid.

i was well under the speed limit doing maybe 80 - 90km/h in a stream of traffic, but i'm curious do the gardai also check for motor tax in this manner because that may be an issue or is it just speeding offenses :pac: college fees last week and all, spare me the high horses :p.

like this camera but on an unmarked, new model mondeo.

ANPR or Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras have been in use here for sometime. They have access to a database which can tell me using the car reg if it has tax and insurance. They showed it in use on the recent series of Traffic Blues on RTE.

The little box is just an infrared floodlight, the ANPR camera itself sits on the rear parcel shelf. Under certain lighting conditions you can see the red glow coming out from it.

Would be an (even more) amazing system if it were all networked up over the phone networks and updated live from databases. At the moment its just done on a daily basis(IIRC).

Hard to say. My guess is that they would have flagged you down or followed you if they had ANPR and it flagged you as having no tax or insurance. Definately for no insurance anyway as they would have impounded the car.

If tax is only out 10 days you will be allright. They would pull you as the ANPR will not say when the tax expired.

It doesn't issue it automatically, it just tells them that it's out.
they'd have to pull you over
