Service is due on my vw Passat (diesel) and I want it do myself and have no idea which engine oil to buy. on top of that I don’t have service manual for car, I think it is 5w/30 Fully Synthetic but then I got confused on ACEA & API as you can see from little comparison (see attachment) all three of them are 5w/30 fully synthetic but only difference I can see is ACEA and API.

    Reference: http://www.driverstechnology.co.uk/oils.htm for ACEA

can some one shed some ligh on this for me please?

Either Castrol edge or the Mobil 1. What year is it???. If it dont have a DPF you can use 5W/40.

If your local Motor Factor is any good they will tell you the required spec from your reg number.

    Fishtits,
i can not really trust local motor factor on this one, last time Halford guys sold be their own brand saying it is the best.

You must use oil meeting spec 507.00

    for PD engines.

The correct grade is not enough anymore these days!
My car needs 5w30 synthetic, but not any old 5w30, it has to conform with a certain spec.
You will find the spec outlined in the owner's handbook, maybe ask at the VW garage, a good (and I mean a GOOD) motor factors (NOT some spotty kid at Halfraud's) or just google it. Micks garage will also tell you (or so the website says).
The days of just chucking any 15w40 into your Escort are long gone, there's a huge array of oils out there and don't believe what any of them promise.
For me it boils down to the correct spec, if that's not listed on the label (the ONLY thing that has to be true about it), drop it like hot coals.
