Diesel and Automatic

I'm in the market for a new motor. There's a preference from herself for an automatic. I've found a nice motor, however I'm a bit skeptical about buying a motor which is both diesel AND automatic.

From what I can tell, the market here in Ireland is focused on manual motors. I don't want to have something I cannot shift when its time to sell.

    Am I crazy?

Depends on the car really, the likes of a 5 series are preferred by many in auto form, auto boxes suit decent diesels in my view.

    Mmmmmmm
Can't see it being a huge issue when flicking it on, you won't get any less for it than you would a manual I would think. You won't recoup the extra it's costing you over a manual now though (if there is a premium on the auto).

A decent sized diesel estate with an auto box sounds apt really and if herself is happy with it ;)

people traditionally bought manuals even if auto was a better option, because autos cost more, and irish dealers have always known well how to charge a premium for extras that can end up with cars having silly prices.

Even in todays market though, i'd imagine a 407 diesel auto would not be something that would be particularly easy to sell on again, as it's a bit of an oddball car

merc or bmw diesel auto is now pretty normal and wouldn't be a problem but when it gets down to "ordinary" more bread and butter family cars, there are far less autos around, and you still have the problem that people are a little bit scared of anything new or different

Diesel and auto work well... driven many, in fact Mrs G has a diesel auto.

As said, some cars you must always buy auto anyway.. Mercedes, Jaguar.

The VAG DSG box is awesome.. really works well.

Don't those boxes have some reliability issues?

..errr.. I only had one as a rental car. :o

I think like many cars you hear horror stories.. nobody ever comes on boards to say "yeah my car is grand, it just works everyday no bother".

The problem is not diesel and autobox, no problem there.

The problem is the auto box.

When they get grumpy they are four figures to sort out.

If you're buying something fresh with history, no great problem.

If you're buying something with North of 100K miles on it you need to be aware of the possibility of a big bill. Autoboxes are not renown for 250K mileages.

They are also less efficient than manual boxes, usually to the tune of 20% in terms of MPG etc.

Auto boxes are well suited to diesel engines. I'd have one no problem.

I've a dsg along with a 2.0tdi, the DSG is brilliant. Just needs an oil change every 40k miles, don't buy one without history of this. It works very well with the diesel. I haven't heard of any common problems/failures with the DSG box, not like the 2.0tdi engine! Economy is quite close to the manual too.
    Definitely recommend it!

530d is your only option here really

Why is that ? (and is it really 20%?)

If an auto is 5 or 6 speed, I'd have thought it would shift at more efficient revs than the person behind the wheel.

He is wrong, some autos are more economical that the manual version - like the PSA diesel EGS cars and some of the DSG cars. And you are right the EGS can shift in 500mS... the DSG is faster.

They're looking at a 407 estate, hardly the same segment as a 530d really is it.

older versions yes, they brought out a second edition ( or series depending on you're own terminology ) which is a fix but still... the though of paying 5k for a new gearbox scares me.... but then again is that not the price you pay for owning a new car ?? if ti was me OP a nice black newer model Mondeo in black with the sleek boot spoiler full works are going cheap ( as they where replaced this year ) so the 09/10 models with low miles are cheap but are a slightly higher tax and a wee bit less poke, though they are still a nippy motor.
depends how much you find badges fashionable and the likes i guess ?
