Using 8 speed shifter with 9 speed cassette

Have a good rear wheel - all that remains of my stolen bike. I got another bike and I am wondering if I can put the wheel to good use.

Bike has: Shimano EF60, 8 speed shifter
Wheel has: SRAM PG950 11-26, 9 speed cassette

I wonder if they can be used together with reasonable adjustment. The shifter has 8 speeds printed on the little window, but perhaps the number of 'click' points that it moves through can be adjusted.

Alternatively, I put the cassette from the bike on the good rear wheel. How much of a job is that for someone who is semi-mechanical?

Simple answer is no. I suggest you get an 8 speed cassette and chain.

As far as I know you can't. It's not a big job to change cassettes though, all you need is a chain whip, an adjustable wrench and the appropriate cassette tool.

    What he said.
The spacing between the gears of a 9sp and 8sp are different and since the 8sp shifter will have a set/non adjustable amount of movement designed soley for 8sp cassette and the same applies for a 9sp set up.
