Microwaves/food heating facilities?

    Hiya,

Just started at WIT - like the look of the place tbh, nice people, etc :)

Only thing I've noticed is that there doesn't seem to be any microwaves or similar for me to heat up food. I have some exclusions in my diet (not religious or anything, just certain things in food don't agree with me, can get ill sometimes if I don't take care) and apart from basic snacks at the college, I would like my big meals or hot meals in the winter to be brought in with me, as I'll have cooked them myself and know exactly whats in them.

Does anyone know if there's any around or am I just blind?

    Cheers :)

Really? That's a bit of a balls :/ I remembered yesterday as well that there were signs up in the canteens saying only food bought in the restaurants could be eaten there, which explains the lack of microwave. So that means I'm limited to cold food brought in, eaten in some random hallway somewhere!

    Well, feck.

Those signs are there for years, just ignore them. Maybe ask one of the women behind the counter while its quiet if they would heat it up for you and explain your requirements in your diet, I doubt they can supply you with anything suitable but they may be more accommodating when they know its a diet issue.

I brought my own lunch plenty of times last year and will be this year as well, I shamelessly sit the the canteen and the gallery eating it. Such a rebel I know.
They really don't care though. :)

Haha well if it's like that then grand, I just didn't want to get fired out with my lunchbox like a bold child! :)

I'd say getting on to the SU would be worthwhile, it would be fairly easy for them to set up an alcove somewhere with a microwave/hotplate.

Use a hair dryer to heat up the food

Aye, thanks for that. A Celtic Tiger cub, I presume...

They won't heat it for you. If they heat it and then you burn your tongue on it, they will be liable com damages and compo should you decide to sue them.
Also the signs there are "h&S" bullsh!t. You can't eat there cos if you fall off the chair or if you choke on yer sandwich they are liable for it.

The student union will not provide a microwave as there are a whole load of insurance and liability issues around it. If someone overheats their food and burns themselves, then WIT as the owners of the microwave are liable for damages when you sue them.

Doesn't that also apply to any business that provides microwaves? If so, how come they can get around it?

ya a lot of places wont heat up food due to insurance reasons sadly. not sure if campus food places would heat em cause they prefer people buy the food on campus. wasnt that rule about not eating food belonging to others not come in for insurance reasons alone?? seem to remember hearing about it

    That's bullsh*t.
Health and Safety. In the Galway Technical Institute (level 5/6) they said the same thing, H&S and insurance reasons, its ridiculous.
In NUIG they have a huge 1800 watt microwave for the students. If there are problems getting a microwave then they should work around them because it is possible.
It just makes life so much easier especially for us poor students. /rant
