Right...here goes I am sick to death of listening and more so paying for the bloody angelus on radio and television. Why should we have to put up with it? From what I can see, I am by law required to pay for a license for a TV channel that condones the catholic church. Every time I hear it, it reminds me of the movie 1984.…

I am sick to death of listening and more so paying for the bloody angelus on radio and television. Why should we have to put up with it? From what I can see, I am by law required to pay for a license for a TV channel that condones the catholic church. Every time I hear it, it reminds me of the movie 1984.

How we go about getting this ridiculous relic done away with?

You wont get a reduction in your fee if the Angelus was removed.
You do have a remote control though.

... I think it's great, the 1 minute delay means you can watch the headlines on another station and then jump back to RTE without missing anything.

It took me 20years to come up with this solution but i just turn the news on at 6.01. No big deal.

I don't like eastenders so i just don't watch it.

A lot of anti-catholicism these days. Why can't people just be tolerable to others?

Godwin incoming I'm afraid but this has been done to death.

Many people in Ireland don't like the catholic church (Is the angelus christian or just catholic?). Many people in Ireland don't like the nazis. If a minute of tv was dedicated to the nazis every day on rte I could still change the channel. Yet I could still complain about it and prefer it was stopped.

Not wanting to give Catholicism preferential treatment over every other faith (and lack thereof) is not a sign of intolerance.

Do you think it's right that the State should fund a prime time call to prayer for one very specific faith?

Predominantly Catholic. Some other churches use it, but most Protestant ones do not.

the sound of the angelous bell reminds me of 40 years ago when we were all together at home at 6pm in the evening. sadly a lot of my family are gone now but every time i hear it it takes me back, so leave it alone.

I just love the sound of the Angelus bells. It would be nice if they put the words of the prayer on the screen also. It's a daily reminder of when God stepped physically into human history.

It's heartening to see that a tiny bit of my tax money is doing some good. Just think of the good example it has on children encouraging them to be reverent and prayerful.

Nobody else around boards seems to discuss religion as much!!!

I'm a lapsed/non-practicing/failed Catholic Son of Ireland and don't pay it much heed either. I don't however feel the need to object to it. I'm sure that plenty of people still do get 'something' from it.
A bit like Sports, Comedy, News, Current Affairs or whatever floats your boat on the TV.
We're a Catholic country whether we like it or not and them's the things that go with it. Pretty much like in Muslim countries where the 'wailing' (praying) is blasted out from Synagogues on a regular basis - and not just once a day.

I know it been done to death here previousy but i've never commented, or at least pretty sure i havn't. Anyway athesist as i am i really have no problem with it, as said give a chance to watch the bbc headlines, as my cathoic dad does, also i like the sound of the 6.1 news as opposed to the 6 news.
But basically all in all i fail to see the harm of it i've no interest in the sport section so i dom't watch it, it not that hard .

Nice pleasent way of describing a prayer about a ghost impregnating a 15yr old girl.

But in away I agree, get the prayer on preferably in latin, with a big image of a cross, and the young woman (mother of god) being visited in the middle of the night.... ''ssshhh god has sent me to give you a child''

Make it true to what it is, make it so cringe catholic that people will go 'what the heck is this?' then more people may start to understand the reaction from those meddling heathens.

I would gladly welcome the Latin prayer anyday over those stupid dongs.... I doubt it would even last a week before being srapped.

Atheist's should campaign for the prayer instead of the dongs, no one could claim we're being ''anti-catholic''. let catholics enjoy the real true angelus full on, instead of this wish/washy pretend to be religious daily holy-dongs.

It's also worth noting that the RTE-DG at the time opposed the reading of the prayer against the strong wishes of the church.

Last time this came up I suggested those wanting the angelus could have an MP3 alarm clock, with the bells recorded which would play at 12 and 6. Problem solved - those wanting the sounds of bells could have them, those not wanting them are spared.

But I really don't think it's that simple. It seems to me that for people who want the Angelus, it's more about inflicting the call to prayer on everyone, rather than something they want for personal reasons.

I mean even without an MP3 alarm clock, anyone could play a recording of the bells for themselves using a tape recorder, or watch it using a video recorder. The bells on RTE are not live, they're a recording, they don't change from day to day - why does the state broadcaster need to repeat it every day - come on guys what's wrong with Sky+?

This was done through the BCC with a claim of discrimination. What they (we/I) should do is make a case in the courts ruling it unconstitutional. The constitution states: "The State guarantees not to endow any religion." By giving such prominent preferential treatment to the Catholic faith the State-run national broadcaster endows that religion with an air of legitimacy and authority.

The Angelus is, in effect, illegal. It's just that Catholics are the majority and changing the way of things is frowned on, generally.

Try not to be irritated when you hear the Angelus.

Think instead of the moments peace it gives to others – a brief therapeutic interlude. Many believers do not actually pray when hear it – but they do remember.

Those who do pray will not always think of the Angelus but will reflect on their faith. I have no time for the over emphasis of Mariology of the Roman Catholic Church and say the Pater Noster.

Open your heart, be secure in your convictions and tolerate those of others.

It's got nothing to do with "anti-catholicism" and everything to do with supporting a secular state in which the state does not endow one religion over another. If people want to create and endow their own religions within the privacy of their own homes, buildings and organizations, then they are and should be free to do so however they wish, once they stick to state law, constitutional guidelines and basic ethical norms.

Can't help but imagine so many people sitting in front of an old Sony with their hands bound behind their back, eyes wide in panic, attached to some form of Ludovico head-gear while the angelus bells toll...

I mean, it's bells. Bells, for a minute. It carries an undercurrent about a belief system, I get it, but it's just puzzling that people care so much about something so innocuous. It's not exactly difficult to ignore.

The point remains if you want to spend some time of the day pausing, reflecting, praying or whatever then that's great, nothing at all is stopping you. if you want to do this whilst listening to church bells then again fair enough, the question is why does a recording of church bells need to be played every day on the main state broadcaster for you to do this?
