Hi there, gsjohn (newbie) here with a question to anyone who knows!
I have a 1986, ex-military LandRover 90 pick up, (military designation F.F.R.) I am a registered member of the Irish Vintage society. My question is, does anyone know whether she qualifies for classic vehicle tax disc rates, and if so, how does one go about sorting it! I tried revenue.ie and that was as helpful as a very unhelpful thing:eek: SO please, any classic enthusiasts out there, help!!! as I cant be paying €900+ becuase of a 2.5 litre perkins diesel! Cheers and HELLO EVERYONE:cool:

It has to be over 30 for classic tax, motortax.ie has the tax at €48.

sadly it's too "new" for classic tax. You'd get classic insurance on an old landrover but until it's over 30 you're stuck with big tax.

hello and welcome by the way

    Hi and welcome.

Yes, you're stuck on commercial tax of €288 until 2016 assuming you can prove commercial use otherwise it will be €948. Is it registered here yet?

Out of interest, you say it's got a Perkins diesel? All UK military Land Rovers prior to the Wolf were fitted with Land Rover 2.5 NA diesel. It would have been originally either soft top or hard top, there were no mil spec truck cabs (you say it's a pick up?)

Hi there and thanks for the info. you are quite right about the body type, when I bought her in 3 years ago she was hard top, full length, bench seats in the rear and a whole heap of rear mounted racks that housed the radio gear, (looks like she had a clansman system, wing mounted at some point.
The lump is a Perkins, so not the original one, and she has a km speedo as she did her days in Germany
I changed the top to a pick up, to assist with the goods rate tax level, but it now seems that the Gov are going to charge me the top rate based on the 2.5 lump! it may seem like sour grapes but there is something very wrong with my old lady being charged at the same rate as a shiny, air-conned Disco or range rover. She has no finness, no p.a.s. no air con, no c.d., she is like a tractor or an ammo box with wheels!!!
Also, at her last two d.O.E. tests, her emmisions were1.075 !! well below the 3.5 failure band and better than some 2009 registered renaults and other modern diesel vehicles.
Nearly a €1000 a year is robbery for what she is, Anyone for a revolution!
    Thanks again

isnt it now changed to pre 1980 only for the vintage tax rate?

No, still rolling 30 year date, but anything after 1980 will have to NCT/DOE tested annually.

There's something about the simplicity of a military LAnd Rover!
