been to tenerife, gran canaria and lanzarote and i would recommend tenerife over the other two, simply for the amount of stuff you can do and see

tenerife is a mecca for watersports, adventurers, hikers etc, you can climb spains highest mountain teide, you can hike the masca valley or see europes tallest seacliffs upclose, from the harbour in Los Cristianos you can get a boat that will bring you out to see dolphins and whales just off the coast, you can get a ferry to nearby la gomera island

Lanzarote is quite unique as nothing seems to grow there at all naturally and the commercialism of the other islands and building boom hasn't happened there either, its quite windy though and won't be a beach destination in october

gran canaria is probably hardest hit by building of tourist apartments etc, they are everywhere, side of mountains, up on cliffs, the main towns on the island are a little on the tacky side but the sands dunes at maspalomas are incredible, lovely drive up to puerto de mogan from maspalomas too, the south of gran canaria will be the warmest that time of year and best place to go if you intend spending time at the beach

october-feb the old people invade the canary islands

It all depends on what you're into. Each of the islands has a little bit of everything, but if you're looking for a mad party type holiday then Playa Del Ingles (not an Island...) on GC or Playa de las Americas on Tenerife are your best options.

If you want something quieter, try the North of Tenerife - Puerto de la Cruz is pretty quiet and surrounded by vast expanses of lush vegetation.

For real get away from it all go to La Gomera, it's beautiful.

Either Lanzarote or Fuerteventura give a good mix of everything you might want.

My favourite island by a long way is GC. Usually stay on the outskirts of Maspalomas so that if you want a boozy night out, PdI is only a few minutes in a taxi away but you can relax by day. Plus hiring a car for a few days will reap endless benefits if you explore inland and the north of the island.

I was in Fuerteventura about a year ago now, very nice quiet place with activities geared towards families more than anything else. You can get the ferry from Fuerteventura to Lanzarote as I remember it so you wont be just stuck on the island but I wouldn't go to Fuerteventura again unless I was with my family.

Depends on what your looking for but Lanzarote is good for the nightlife, fuerteventura is good for the peace and quite:)
