Could I use the lnb off my sky dish with the triax dish or do I have to buy a new lnb?

Should be alright with an 80cm, the lnb won't receive signal from the whole available dish area but that shouldn't be a problem with a strong signal unless maybe if you have it at a big offset.

I disagree think you would be better buying the correct LNb

Of course the right one would be better. Anyway, if it was me I'd just try it & see how it performs, get a bit of 1st hand knowledge.

Yep theres that benefit but depending on the lnb it might not even fit in the triax clamp . LNb's are relatively cheap these days and you might find out the sky lnb does not perform when its raining outside in the middle of your favourite programme.

What would be the correct LNB for an 88cm Triax dish?

Most non sky type witha 40mm collar, something like this http://cgi.ebay.ie/Triax-Quad-0-3db-LNB-HD-Ready-/200506427751?pt=UK_ConEle_SatCableFreeview_RL&hash=item2eaf1d4967

Ignore what they say about HD ready , theres no such thing.

Ignore the noise figure, too. It's meaningless unless they state the frequency and conditions at which it was measured.

A real 0.7dB NF "correct" LNBF will outperform a Sky LNB on a Triax 80cm dish. Lower than 0.4dB NF LNBFs are fantasy. On an overall system going from a real 0.7dB NF to a 0.4dB NF is a negligible change.

What in your expierience Watty is a good brand(s) of lnb?

I get 3-6% better signal on my meter on the titanium lnb .. Which is important when i fit 1w Thor or 26e arabsat..:)

OP question was do I have to buy an lnb, answer probably not, if you're willing to accept that performance will not be optimal and some bodging may be required.

OP could have given more info on the setup re. multiple sats. etc.

yeh should be fine, i remember had a spare lnb lying around so i got an old sweeping brush broke it up and stuck it on the side of the arm on the dish, worked wonders :D

If all you're after is an improvement in performance on 28E, then of course a well matched lnb is a must.

Should have said in the OP, I'm losing the signal when it rains so was thinking upgrading to an 80cm dish.

Tried realigning with a sat finder but issue remains.

Although I have a fairly old Thompson HD box and I read it could be the issue more than the dish.

Have you tried to skew of the lnb ?

Hi Tony does that mean rotating it slightly?

Just found it here at the end of the page.
    http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/lnb.htm

The LNB, above, has a spigot which fits into the Sky minidish arm. The LNB rotational position or "skew" can be adjusted by slackening the two screws that secure the spigot and twisting the LNB until best signal quality is achieved.

The LNB on the left has a single screw but the principle is the same. A Sky LNB will often have graduated marks from 1 to 5 as a guide to alignment. Start at 3 and twist each way to locate the best position.
