WTF is wrong with my GP.

I have suffered with eczema for most of my life. But recently (I'm a 21 yr old f) its started to flare up all over my face.
I went to my GP a few times, he didnt listen to me, brushed me off, ignored what I was telling him about itching in my eyes and when I asked him what was causing it he said "you tell me".
I told him - none of these creams you are giving me are working. But I couldnt get another GP to see me on the medical card at such short notice.
I asked him what type of eczema I have cause I read on the net there are different types and he couldnt tell me

I went to him one last time and he gave me a cream AGAIN!
I put it on and my whole face swells up.
Then I read the pamphlet (I know I should have read it before I put the cream on) and it says "this medication is not for use on eczema and will worsen the condition.

He also prescribed it to me for use for 2 weeks- twice daily. In the pamphlet it says - DO NOT USE ; for more than 5 days in a row.

I also get herpes breakouts on my mouth way more often than I should, I'm talking once a month for 4 or 5 days. My college Doc told me i shouldnt get it more than a couple times of year at most. When I went to my GP to ask him about it and he said "why is this happening" well shouldnt he tell me???????

I also came to him with what I now know to be IBS (college dr told me). I had constipation and bloating. He wouldnt prescribe me laxatives because my mother had an eating disorder and he thought I was trying to get them to lose weight.
The same happened when I tried to get him to change my pill as I was putting on weight rapidly....he thought i has anorexia just because my mother did!!

He also prescribed me dianette which the people in the well woman centre told me should only be prescribed i you have acne, which i dont have and not for regular contraception. He kept refusing to change me or talk about alt. contraceptive methods.

I have been looking for another GP but it is hard to get one who takes medical card patients, esp in Crumlin. And my college Dr. cant write medical card prescriptions.

What I really want is a) to find a dr who will help me with my eczema as I am very furstrated and upset over the whole thing. I never even leave the house between that and the herpes. Would I be better off just paying

    b) know if there is somewhere I can lodge a complaint

    c) can anything be done if I have no proof of this...

Pre-emptive warning - please folks, no medical advice.

Sounds like a bad doctor. Not listening, prescribing the wrong medicine, basing treatment on your mother's behavior. Outrageous stuff.

You just need to find a new doctor as soon as you can. Preferably a dermatologist.

As for complaints, not sure how that works. Good luck.

Yeah go change your GP (Edit: as soon as possible).

I'd go beyond changing GP's. This doctor is potentially dangerous. Prescribing medication which are guaranteed to worsen a condition, and telling you to take medication far beyond the safe timeframe.
    He should be reported.

    Hi OP,

I hope this isn't considered medical advice so mods please remove if it is. with regards to your IBS, I do know that IBS is something that can only and should only be diagnosed after ruling out other causes such as colitis, crohns or coeliac disease. Did you have any tests to rule out other causes liek an endoscopy or colonoscopy..blood tests? There is a huge problem in Ireland with doctors diagnosing IBS BEFORE ruling out other causes that need different treatment.
Please change doctors, there are so many doctors that take medical cards. Find one on a bus route if you do not drive. You do not need to suffer and this doctor sounds incredibly insensitive and useless at his job.
I hope you make the move!

I think it's the Irish Medical Council who you can report to, but I'm not sure.

OP, is the GP the only doctor in the practice? If not then one of the others should be able to see you and you will still be covered by your medical card. If not then I would ring around every GP in your area and see is there someone willing to take you on ASAP. If the college doctor knows about the situation then perhaps he would be able to advise you about it.

Maybe see about getting a referral to a dermatologist. There may be long waiting lists so if possible try to get referred sooner rather than later.

Here is the procedure to make a complaint :http://www.medicalcouncil.ie/Media-Centre/Publications/2010/Making-a-complaint-about-a-doctor.pdf

If you are ever worried about a doctors treatment plan or medication you have been prescribed please don't be afraid to question it, your concerns should be taken seriously by your doctor not just brushed off!

Hope this isn't considered medical advice as it's just a supplement but OP, Lysine is absolutely fantastic for preventing cold sores. Try a good brand (like Solgar) and take 1000-2000mg per day. Have a Google of foods that trigger outbreaks (chocolate and peanuts are major offenders). I've been taking the above with zinc for 6 months and not a sign of one.

I don't want to give medical advice, just to clarify one point that seems to be bothering the OP, Dianette is a contraceptive. One of it's side affects means it can also be used to treat acne. Here is a link to the patient information leaflets http://www.medicines.ie/medicine/7937/PIL/Dianette/

Time to change doctors though I think. You can get a form from a local clinic which will allow you to change your GP for your medical card.

Regarding your/his choice of pill, I know I've had to go back to my own GP several times to change brand as they just didn't suit me. (ker-razy mood swings). Each time we had a chat about how I'd gotten on and he'd suggest another type. That's how it's supposed to be- you're paying for their opinion. You shouldn't have a row on your hands every time you go to the docs, especially when they're not exactly outlandish requests.

On top of the advice that everyone else has already given, I think it's disgraceful that your doctor used your mother's illness as a reason not to prescribe you medication. Did he actually say to you that he wasn't precribing you laxatives because your mother has an eating disorder? This is highly against the medical code of ethics...he has no right to discuss another patient with you, even if it is your mother. I would be making a complaint sooner rather than later.

    +1

Go to your local health centre in Crumlin, simply check in at the reception and tell them that you have to change Doctors. They will give you a list of GP's that are taking medical card patients. I had to do this for my teenage daughter and she has a very nice lady GP now. OP it is worth taking the time to make a move and you could get a GP as good as at your College.
