car dealer tactics?

Is it unreasonable for a car dealer not to accept an offer of 30,500k on a 33k priced car. Straight cash on an 8 month old car.

Took a test drive today and gave him 30k offer, the guy didn't want to haggle past 500 euro off. The thing is I really want this car and I dont want to come across as a desperate buyer and as such taken advantage of.

Is he playing the game and should I wait him out or is 2 to 3k off the price a fantasy?

It completely depends on how he priced it.

    What make/model is it?

    Depends on the individual car.

More than likely, that is the price, no going down.

Thats how we are selling at the moment, people go to Aldi because there price is the cheapest so we price our cars at the cheapest. "The price is the price"

I'm not saying its always the case but mostly it is now

As above - what is it, how much did it cost new, what's the mileage on it, how are similar cars priced?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

In fairness it doesnt really matter what car it is, 1.5% off a marked price is pretty measly, id be looking for much more than that too.

There are not a lot of buyers of second hand cars in the 30k+ bracket and the dealer is playing a serious game of poker with you.

Offer in writing your price and tell him that you are also looking elsewhere. If he does not accept in 48hrs then he has called your bluff.

Sorry OP but we need some more information, There is no set amount/percentage you can expect off any car. If the dealer has his car far cheaper than anyone else you cant expect much discount.

So what type of car is it, and then we may be able to point towards a reasonable price.

That's a mad way of looking at it.

If he increases the price to €45k, he could give the OP a 25% discount. It wouldn't be a better deal though.

Plus these days, with online ads and phone quotes, if the dealer prices in a lot of haggle room, his sticker price may be so high that nobody even looks at the car.

Sorry I partially didnt read it correctly. Whats the RRP of this car from new?

1.5% discount makes no sense. It only makes sense if you are using a % of the RRP

    +1

It's not all about the sticker price and getting money off that, the car could be very well priced as is.

And to the poster who said there are little people with 30k to spend, if that was the case there would be very, very few garages still open.

    A strange question.

How much margin do you think he has on that car?

What margin does he need to make a profit?

What profit do you think he's entitled to make?

Every penny he concedes is a penny off his bottom line.

Its an Opel Insignia 160Bhp Elite 6500kms.

I just assumed (ignorantly maybe) that all dealers had haggle room on their sticker prices and that my offer was reasonable enough.

That car lists at €34k, give a grand or so for delivery and metallic and it's €35-35.5k new. It's well overpriced at €33k imo.

If this is the correct new price, tell him to take a hike with his 33k for a 10 reg.

Even if it was the auto I'd be slow to pay anything approaching €33k for a year old car.

Sorry I made a mistake its an 11 reg. first registered Jan '11.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,822 ✭✭✭✭EPM

Even still it's overpriced. That's 5-7% discount on a used car compared to a new one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,688 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

How muh would he sell a new one for on a striaght deal? If its listed at 35 to 35.5k new, Surely a straight sale would knock a lump off that. Miles overpriced surely even on an 11 plate unless it has some very desireable and costly extras that you really need.

While dealers are entitled to a profit, he is having a laugh at €33k for a used one.

I know what a new one (inlcuding metallic) costs the dealer. Unless it is loaded with extra's (NAV, Sports Seats, 19" Wheels, Bluetooth etc.) then €30k is actually pretty reasonable.

Overpriced and that salesmen should snap up that offer you made

    Not a good deal OP

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,822 ✭✭✭✭EPM

OP is it the one in Airside with the "Premium Leather and Steering Wheel"? I don't know how much they are new but there's some without that listed at €31k before haggling.

I think I was looking at this last night in Airside!

Was meeting a lad in Swords and was looking at it while waiting

Has it got manky coloured seats ?

If it is that one, it's an unusual combo.....

AFL is a €1,340 option - cool but not essential
    Bluetooth is €325
They are the sports seats @ €495

No option listed for Premium Leather and steering wheel, so no idea of the cost for this bits. Wouldn't pay extra myself, but the sports seats are very comfy.

The colour of them would split opinion I guess...I'd like them on a black car tbh.

Not mad in the slightest, every dealer has wiggle room. Unless its something quite rare and unique, which chances were in this case it wasn't (ie an insignia), the price is always conservative.

In this case, the car is well overpriced, as most cars are judging by every "what will I buy thread" that gets posted.

I would have to agree - even on a car priced to sell at €3,300 you would expect the seller to let it go for close to €3k. On a €33k (that's not priced to sell at all by the sounds of things) leaving only €500 wiggle room is ridiculous IMO.

does that go for higher priced cars too? Was in main dealer today looking to buy a €38,000 car cash and they weren't interested in the slightest on an offer of €35,000

There is a huge shortage of decent used stock at the moment, so if it's something saleable, and there aren't immediate cash flow problems, dealers can hold out for higher prices.

Even the ropey ex. rental sh1te that's been hanging around our place for ages has shifted now.

The seats in the Insignia in Airside, are Ergonomic seats. They're actually really confy seats, and it ads a slightly different steering wheel too.

That price sounds very optimistic for a used Elite though. You could probably swing a new one for not much more than you're offering now.

It depends, if its the cheapest car on carzone well then obviously you wont get huge discount

On the other hand if its well up the list price wise, they may well be able to give you a good discount

It comes back to the same principal of trading in your car. Its the Price to Change, not what discount am I getting or how much of a trade in am I getting
