    Hi

New here, doing a lot of travelling with Aer Lingus, at least twice a week, and noticied that there is a bong sound in the cabin 30 seconds or so after lift off.
Can anyone tell me what this sound is for?

    Thanks

    Tobes

Pretty sure its when the landing gear is up and locked the emergency exit sign lighting extinguishes,A320 is your man for this one

Ya I'd agree the gear up and the doors shutting, but it may have something to do with the Brakes disengageing,The Airbus Hydraulic system makes lots of very strange whining noises, the most annoying is the PTU, The LG cycle on the A320 takes about 13 seconds for gear down and lock and about 16secs for gear up and locked,or maybe the other way around!!

Correct. You'll see the opposite (Bong and Emergency Exit signs illuminating) when the gear is down and locked on approach.

The "Boing" noise comes from the CIDS system. The noise comes when gear is up and locked and gear doors closed. Similarly, on landing the same happens when gear is down and locked and gear doors shut, you will hear the boing noise and also all exit signs will illuminate and stay that way.
Off the top of my head also, via the CIDS system, you will see on the ground when the Cabin Crew close the Passenger door, All Exit signs illuminate.

The Same logic is used on A318/319/320/321, A330/340. Dunno about the A380 but would guess its along the same lines

Ah you have to love the wonderful and weird things ya hear.

Its actully used from the flight deck and is a sound you hear that lets the cabin crew know that they are released from their seats. Normally 10mins after departure the pax are released (depending on if there is any chop).

Yep - as said above...from flight deck also directly when the Fasten Seat Belt sign is put on/off. You may also notice on some airlines with approx 10 or so minutes to land, you will hear anywhere between 4 - 6 chimes in a row. The Pilots flick the Fasten Seat Belt sign on/off/on - this gives signal to cabin crew in relation to their landing preparations of approx 10 mins or so to touch down. It just depends on the Companys Operating procedure to perform it, but Aer Lingus always do it.
The one after take off is due to landing gear up - the one later on a few minutes is when the seat belt sign goes off and usualy when the Cabin Crew unbuckle and go about their duties

Airbus shouldn't have a Boing sound.

The No Smoking sign switch is set to Auto
In Auto, the default mode is that the No Smoking sign goes off (with accompanying noise effects) when the nose gear locks up.
AL aircraft are modded such that the No Smoking sign is always on when the switch position is in Auto. The noise effect has not been modified out, hence it still makes the bong noise when the nose gear locks up.
Its actully used from the flight deck and is a sound you hear that lets the cabin crew know that they are released from their seats.

Such a procedure does not exist in AL. The cabin crew get up at their own discretion after take off unless the commander has specifically instructed them to stay seated.

    A380 has it as well.

Pretty sure 777-300 does it too.
