Leather Sofa Peeling

Looking for some advice re the above. We bought a brand new leather suite (black) in 2007 - Sold as a genuine leather suite. In the past year parts of the arms on both the armchairs and sofa are bubbling and are begining to peel. More frustrating as there is only 3 of us in the house and the suite does not get abuse.

Called the sofa supplier a number of times - Sent a guy out to take photos and he talked about repair. Haven't heard back from them since. I know that this topic was discussed on Eddie Hobb's Consumer Show a few months back.

Any ideas or guidence would be appreciated. We still have the receipt but I am of the personal opinion that the Sofa Retailer has responsibilities under the Sale of Goods act i.e. the Suite was sold as genuine leather sofa and its not fit for purpose in its current state:mad:

Just beware that not all leather is actual leather.

    The following terms get used:

    "Full Leather" - Actual leather.

"Leather mate" - only the surfaces are leather and other parts of the sofa are polyurethane(PU).

"Top grain" - only the top layer is actual leather, it's a bit like a leather veneer.

    "Split leather"

    "Bonded leather"

"Leather like / simulated leather" - 100% plastic and fabric.

Full leather and even good quality other types of non-full leathers should not split / bubble. It sounds like the sofa is very poor quality.

I would suggest that you get an expert, perhaps an old furniture shop that specialises in leather or even a boot maker, to try and identify what type of leather it actually is or whether it's leather at all.

Get any model numbers, serial numbers etc that you can find on the couch and google them to see if you can find exactly who the manufacturer was and how the couch was made.

If the amount of money involved is up to €2000, consider starting Small Claims Court proceedings. This only costs €18.
