    hi,
i am getting a new laptop soon and would like to know the best way to transfer files from my old laptop to the new one. i even have a theory as to how this might work but said id ask here first. old laptop has an ethernet port capable of 10/100mbps transfer. router has ethernet port capable of 100mbps. new laptop has an ethernet port capable of 10/100/1000mbps. lets call the old laptop computer a and the new laptop computer b.
if i connect computer a and computer b into my router using ethernet cables will i then be able to use windows easy transfer to copy my files from computer a to computer b. both laptops are also windows 7. computer a has intel t4200 dual core processor with egb ram. computer b has intel i5 processor and 4gb ram. what is the maximum speed that i can accomplish via this method. i have about 100gb of data on the old laptop that i would like to keep. thanks

Ya you can do that. You just need to make sure file sharing is set up on computer a. If it's not set up. google for instructions. You might also want to share more folders than are shared by default, so you don't have to move everything to the shared folder before copying it across.

You can expect to maybe move about 5-10MB per second, it depends on all kinds of things. It will take some time to copy 100GB. I suggest you don't try to copy everything in one go because sometimes these transfers can stall. It would be a good idea to use file sync software or something similar so if there's a problem you can resume easily.

Your best bet is to copy all your files to an external hard drive, or even use a USB memory stick to copy files over bit by bit. It will be faster than transferring the files over your network, no matter how well tuned your network is.
