The .17 is great for rabbits and the odd fox ammo works out between 16-20euro for 50 compared to between 5-10euro for 50 .22 rounds.

    Welcome aboard.

If you have previous shooting experience, even with a shotgun, you are fairly aware of the basics surrounding safety, etc. To that extent i'd be looking more at the .17hmr if you intend to go for the occassional fox. I would normally recommend a .22lr for all newbies, but usually they would include those that have never held or owned a firearm before.

The .17 would be flatter shooting, capable of rabbits aswell as the occassional fox out to 130 yards. Further for rabbits with practice. Ammo is not overly expensive but runs at least twice that of standard .22 ammo.
.Also was sold a slab of eley 28g no8s for pigeons for 40eur on advice from dealer went to another shop and was told Id be better of throwing stones, any advice would be great help thanks

I love those kind of dealers. If they don't agree with it its useless. No such thing as "you could get better", etc. I use 28g Eley 7.5s for the occassional pigeon. They are a great cartridge, but really only good at ranges out to about 30 yards. For the further shots you want a little more. however they are an excellent cartridge for clays also.

well i always use 8s on pigeons and crows no probs at all just have to give them more lead but those cartgriges are very fast bear that in mind and my advice is tight chokes i always use them 1 and 2s in both barrels or extra full chokes

you'l be suprised how many lefties are on this forum, like myself.

im after putting a deposit on a .17 hmr but its right handed. straight stock on it without a cheek piece so it wont be that bad as im used to firing a .22mag.

If you plan on shooting foxes either buy a .22 and later get a 223 or 204 for foxes.
if you cant afford that the .17hmr is good for foxes out to 150 yards plus, but shot placement is really important.

the cz 452 american is available in both .22 and .17hmr

the savage 93R17 BTVss is also available in .17 hmr. (also .22)

there the 2 i was looking at but didnt have the money for a new one and left hand rifles are hard to find. ring around and a dealer may order one in for you. lefthooker was selling his left hand savage .22 in the for sale/wanted section here too. could still be for sale.

id go for the .17hmr. flatter shooter and with practice can shoot rabbits at .200 yards.

ammo prices are .22 about 8 euro for 50 and hmr is about 16 for 50.

    North East, East, South East?
....... went to Jack Smyths in Newry today

Was up there about 5 months ago. Seems to have gone almost completely away from the shooting side of things. Had an unbelievable selection of gear years ago. Has a great selection of clothing though, but as you said a bit on the expensive side. For fishing you'd be set.

you'll get a very good setup for 1000 euro. does it have to be left handed? theres no recoil on a rim fire so you have one hand on the trigger and another in position by the bolt and reload right handed without taking your hand away from the trigger for quicker follow up shots.

lovely sake quad there within in budget and all the bits you'll need for cleaning

Give us a county. You'll get a good list of shops nearby. Then we can suggest shops that are further afield.

Yeah seen that one already real nice setup looks good but I have shot righthanded rifles before just a bit slow and awkward getting the bolt action back for a second shot whats the best bet in a rim fire

using your right hand for the bolt and left for the trigger becomes second nature after a few shots. only time its a problem is when firing off the shoulder.

I'm in the same boat as yourself, lefthanded. Have a lefthand thumbhole .22lr but when it came to buying my .17HMR I went for a Sako Quad, which only comes in righthand. As garv has already stated lefthand trigger and righthand bolt is now second nature.

Will more than likely go down that road myself, sako looks a great job and gets good reviews can anybody recomend another .17 in the same league that does come in leftie and is there really much of a difference between a .22lr and a .17hmr at about 100yrds

the .17 is a hornady magnum rimfire.

the .22 is travelling much slower and with sub sonic rounds its well traveling below the speed of sound. most people 0 the .22 at 50 -70 yards as it begins to drop like a stone after that. the .17hmr is flat out to 120
it packs a hell of alot more punch too.

    17n22.png

im forever pasting this chart, it shows a good example of how much the bullets drop.
the 2 advantages the .22 has over the hmr is the price of ammo and the face you can moderate it with sub sonics and you hear almost nothing.

I can't fault the Sako, luv the look and feel of it. Oh yeah and its super accurate. Really like the flush fit mag too.
Only lefthanded rimfires i know of are the CZ 452 and the Savage 93R17 BTVLSS, which is a lovely rifle but as rare a rocking horse s**t. I know of a few righthanded ones but the lefties are impossible to find

I printed out this chart, did a few calculations and stuck it to my rangefinder. Give a quick range, reference it against inches drop and then dial in required clicks. Makes taking 200yds+ shots a lot easier.
