Whom do you respect the most?

I was just considering this question, and I don't mean in a distant, professional capacity. I mean on a personal level. For whom do you have the utmost respect?

I know an auld boy who has worked every single day of his 80 years. His mother died of cancer when he was a boy, he never went to secondary school, outright earned everything through his own grit and intelligence. I've never heard him complain, despite having every right to. I've seen him work days that would knock me down, half a century his junior, and the worst complaint being the arthritis in his knee is giving him hassle. He could be on his 12th hour behind the bar, I've seen the fatigue in his eyes, but the smile he has for everyone is genuine.

So he has my respect for being the twice the man I am. The toughest, hardiest man I've ever met, who has never asked for hand-outs, who can take it all, and still have a smile on his face for you.

Who do you look up to, and why?

Most Irishmen over the age of 60 are hard as nails. They had to be. My parents get big respect, especially my father. Worked like a donkey for years, highly intelligent and never afraid to go against the grain, even if it meant becoming unpopular with the neighbours. All round good egg.

I'm the eldest son so I don't have that looking-up-to-a-big-brother thing going on.

I respect my Parents and that's about it.

Everyone else needs to earn my respect. I don't respect people because of their titles.

What a rapid downward spiral from excellent OP through mindless responses.

Anyway, me mam - raised us all on her own as a young widow and did a great job with 4 of us. I however am the 5th and she seriously dropped the ball there. Stil, 'spec.

I admire these two for their courage:

[1] Yuri Gagarin - The first man in space.

    [2] Joseph Kittinger
On August 16, 1960, he made the final jump from the Excelsior III at 102,800 feet (31,300 m). Towing a small drogue parachute for initial stabilization, he fell for four minutes and 36 seconds, reaching a maximum speed of 614 miles per hour (988 km/h) before opening his parachute at 18,000 feet (5,500 m).
