My opion on them is stay away from the petrols, they are thirsty and underpowered!
ive done plenty of research into these in the last 3 months as im on the look out for an e92 320D
i think the 2006 came in 2 models e90 and the e92 (altho the e92 are as rare as hens teeth in 2006 models)
As for the diesels. look for a good service history and ask if the ABS pump ever gave bother, it'd be common enough in that model but can be got under
    warranty if it does fail.

Check her for smoke, nail it and watch the rear view mirrors, watch for uneven tyre wear..

Another thing to check is the continuity of acceleration, make sure it pulls smooth and even with no interruptions!

Apart from the the e90 models are fairly reliable the engines are sweet as a nut!

330s are thirsty and underpowered ?
Relatively thirsty in comparsion to a focus perhaps, underpowered in comparison to what?

sorry i ment the 320i are underpowered and thirsty .... my bad sorry
(and underpowered in comparsion to other 2.0 petrols)

the 330 are thirsty , they only get about 20 mpg and that motor way driving

Now I've never owned one but 20mpg on the motorway is a huge underestimate. I reckon 30 is easily achievable on a motorway run, probably a little higher.

    2006 3 Series has 3 models E90, E91 and E92,

320i underpower and thirsty ? well i have one and well can say on both counts its not underpowered and thirsty but then again if i planted my foot down then it would be thirsty

as for a 330i brilliant machine and is thirsty but not as thirsty as a M car :P

i havent either but i've spoken to BMW owners over on BMW-Driver.net , and they reckong that the 330i are just complete pigs .i found that hard to believe aswell but this came from BMW owners !! ??

IMO the e90 320d would be a far nicer car , but that just me !

A 330 underpowered? And a 320d is not? Aside from that older diesels unless you do lots of miles can be dodgy with increased service intervals and lots of expensive bits to go wrong not to mention noise smoke and smelly diesel.

i beg to differ , the e90 320i is underpowered in comparsion with other 2ltr cars no doubt about it .. . anyway a bit off topic i was just giving my opion in realtion to the origanal question and mistook it for a 320 !!!

Which owners were you talking to, because im a long term member there and that sounds like tripe...

Underpowered ! Are you crazy. And its only going to be as thirsty as you make it. 26Mpg is easily achievable. And the 330 doesnt come with the high running costs of the M series. Believe me i know ;)

So you get most of the advantages but not the leap in costs....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,800 ✭✭✭voxpop

A 330 should average 30mpg. If you are pottering about town then yes 20 is what your likely to get

NO i said that the 320i was underpowered

My 2005 530i (same 258 Bhp engine afaik) returns 22Mpg suburban only driving 30-34 If I mix it up a bit with motorway miles and take it handy.

Very very smooth engine, plenty of poke, came from an M3 so it took a bit of getting used to the power drop, but its got not far off the every day practical power of the M3, only lacks the lightning fast 0-60 (but a claimed 6.5 Secs isn't exactly sluggish)

Obviously a diesel 320d is the sensible choice, but I only did 6000 miles's last year, bought it for a an awful lot less than the equivilant 520d, much higher spec than the penny pinching badge obsessed 316i/320d/520d brigade tend to go for.

If your mileage is low enough and you plan on hanging on to it for a while (and you get it for a steal hopefully) it is a far superior car to own than the 320d/320i obvious choices. (IMO)

yes complete pigs on juice , where does it say there that they are underpowered ??

i said in an earlier post the they were underpowered but i ment to say that the 320i were underpowered which i correct in a later post !!

No you corrected yourself first, and then went on to make the claim about bmwdriver recommendations. Read your post history and stop back tracking.

either way this is going around in circles.

My opinion on the 330 has been given.

    - Also editing your threads to make up on your obviously flawed knowledge is of no use to the OP

well you really know your beemers ! i have a 320i and it can take on any other 2lt car on the road if i want to and i know i have the power there if needed.

now i have a old M car and that can take me 320i anyday but you have to compare like with like

320i 6 cylinders cant beleive your saying its underpowered 168bhp after 2007 or 148bhp to 2007

Not interested in diesel, still think they sound like tractors - although maybe not the newer engines!

The 330 does look nice and feels amazing to drive

Nice car OP, get one, you won't be disappointed
Make sure you get a nice and properly maintained example. When I say nice, I mean with a M-Tech body kit and least , satnav, leather seats (which they probably have on the 330i already)

Yeah I am amased at the drop in value...especially on e60 too, but many of them are diesel with lots of miles though...

Any link to that as I'm a long term member over there and that sounds very unlike the members I know? :D

The 2.2 I6 & the 3.0 I6 are very, very similar in petrol consumption as the 2.2 has to work a little harder to move the same weight as the 3.0 - Obviously the tax is much higher but maintenance and petrol is very similar.

The 3.0 is a great engine, super smooth and nice bit of power!
