I'm at a cross road at the moment, and would like a few suggestions maybe .
I've been thinking of getting an extension build onto the house, going to cost me about 20k ( 15ft x12ft ) . I dont know weather to go ahead with it or not, the reasons been I'm not going to be living there for the rest of my life, probably move in about 5/10 years time, so is it a waste of money ? will it add 20k to the price of the house, when i do go to sell it ?
I have the money in the bank, but do I want to spend all my savings on it ? what would you do ????

Would certainly price around in any event to see what is the story with pricing.
If you design it right and get it at a good price and maybe even do some of the easier work inside yourself it certainly will help when you come to sell on. Might not make the full price back but it will help the cause

The question is simply whether you require it or not. Is this a case of necessity or luxury.

From an economic point of view, you wont loose money on it. The cost to construct will always be inherent in the value of the dwelling... however the value of anything is always down to the demand for it. If no one want its its doesnt have a monetary value.

As far as construction goes, its definitely a good time to be building. Not only for the value in the market with lots of materials at cost price, sales etc but also the huge availability of labour at reasonable rates.

A good architect / technician would be able to assess your needs against your current situation and advise accordingly if you are unsure yourself. Its not unheard for an architect to suggest solutions to a client problem that doesnt involve a new build.
