Should one deduct the €50 rental fee from the cash present?

One should buy a black suit and stfu.

If one is having a black tie wedding, one doesn't expect something as crass as cash for a present.

A mongoose bearing a diamond tiara carrying a bowl of crystal would be more appropriate.

One should not have to. Probably wear it twice in one's entire lifetime.

At one's court appearance and one's funeral?

seriously you'll always need a suit for something.

The problem with deducting the hire charge from the cash gift would be trying to get that tenner back from the happy couple.

A black tie suit is not the same as a normal suit. I have a normal suit which has worked quite well up to this point.

Black tie weddings are very 2007. You should decline the invite and tell them you'll read about it in VIP magazine, the tacky twats.

I've seen loads of those dumped in skips after the honeymoon.

Don't have a black suit. Hence the rental cost.

What are you, my wife? Because she had said something eerily similar but its a wedding of her friends so I am gonna release some steam here instead of starting a full blown fight at home.

Go to the wedding just wearing a black tie and tell the bride that's your present to her.

    That...is...GENIUS! :D

only one thing worse than a black tie wedding is when the wedding is "black tie optional" so they are not enforcing you to splash out on extravagance, but they will laugh at you if you dont :(

Of course you could go dressed up as someone of African/Siam descent and when queried just say, "Oh I must have misheard. I thought you said this was a Black Thai wedding."

Went to one once..still have the clobber. Never ever again

Was invited to 2, turned up to both in a charcoal grey normal suit with a black tie (not a dickie bow). Nothing was really said but I didn't care as I saved about €70 on rental anyhow.

Ive been to 3 or 4 black tie weddings, depending on how seriously the black tie bit was taken-one of them people kinda just showed up in work suits, it was a bit odd.

I dont really like a dress code at a wedding, much like I hate fancy dress/awkward effort-requiring theme parties that arent at halloween, but black tie is easy enough to get around once you own a black suit. You can smarten it up easy enough. And if you dont own a black suit, you should. Men suiting up is the most underated thing ever!

It depends how much you're willing to spend on the gift and how well you know the couple I suppose.

You can get loads of use out of a good suit. Black tie breakfast, black tie workday. You could even try black tie jogging.

It's a bit much to expect people to show up to your silly wedding and wear clothes that you've picked out and buy you a present, surely?
