Had my car nctd and was more than happy with results:D Was expecting tester to direct me to bus stop:p Have this car a year now Suzuki Ignis and found out a week after purchase it had 3 gearboxes fitted (not together):D So I needed new gearbox but with advice from a boardsie here I just decided to keep driving it despite the whirring dynamo noise. So here I am and all it needs is a cv boot for the grand cost €15.49. Never put oil in it or anything and it passed everything except the cv boot which is just a visual. Lots of newer 2007 cars failing for clutches omissions etc.I am a happy bunny ;)Saved on servicing etc.

You are only saving on servicing by choosing to not have your car serviced. Just because you passed the NCT does not mean you don't have to service your car for 2 years.

At least get an oil/filter/air filter service if there is no recent record of same being done.

False economy I'm afraid. Very much a short term saving.

€15.49 for cv boot, add €50 for fitting.

As said, "not even putting a drop of oil in" is asking for trouble. Your lucky, but if i was you i'd be getting a full service, or at the very least an oil/filter and air filter. After that i'd check your mileage against the last water pump/timing belt and other MUST DO'S in car maintenence.

It'll cost alot more than €15.49 should your belt decide its had enough and wants to snap halfway home from work one day ;)

Oh, and well done on the nct, i can only assume a pat on the back was the reason for this thread?

Just cause a car passes the nct doesn't mean that it is alrite/roadworthy.

+1 to all the above. The longer you go without servicing the more likely you are to have a BIG service bill in the near future.
Odds are it'll be big enough to make the car not worth repairing, meaning you'll have to buy a new car.

    Not worth it imho.

    I don't have a toothache therefore I don't need to go to the dentist for a check-up.

    Same logic.

More like, I don't have a toothache so I don't need to brush my teeth.

The piece of Paper on the Window from the NCT won't stop the car from falling apart.

Your not saving anything by not taking care of the car.

I doubt anyone here would advise you to drive without servicing and if they do they should be banned. The NCT is only good for not getting screwed by garages, basic maintenance should never be skipped

Even sticking in cheap oil is better then not doing it and an oil filter is only around €10. Pick up a couple of ramps and you could have it done yourself in 30 min.

Have you even looked at your brake pads? Waiting for the noise will destroy your disks.

Guys, obviously the OP should service the car, but it looks to me as if she just followed standard Motors advice and didn't blow any money on Pre-NCT preparations.

So Bettyboop, yes, you did the right thing, now get an oil service done along with the CV boot.

The OP said she was advised here not to get the gearbox replaced, she was never advised not to service the car :)
    Thread is here ........

People post all sort of looney/wrong and potentially expensice advice etc here way worse than recommending not to service a car.

Thats exactly as I meant Zube
Got new brakes when I got car €350 from Suzuki Garage as a quick fit place told me only a main Suzuki Dealer can do them ( yeh he saw me coming) have got oil filters too.Oil looked ok so I left it water and other fluids good too. Thought I would have more fails than a cv boot so rather than getting ripped off on a service put it through NCT as is. Timing belt is a permanent belt I was told,by a Toyota main dealer.Yes will look after car now I know it wasn't as bad as I thought.Sorry should have explained my post better.:p
