Jump leads on wrong way round

    05 - Opel Tigra - 1.4
I needed to get the car jumped and a guy helped me out with it. He had a jump starter pack, I was sitting in the car, he put them on the wrong way first (saw the sparks) for about 5 seconds. He then put them on the right way and I got it started.

Since then my radio is dead, it won't turn on, the car is fine. I'm unsure if it was caused by the leads on wrong or due to the battery being dead. Any advice?

Jesus Christ! Surprised he didn't blow up the battery pack!

I'd say the radio fuse probably blew or a relay got burned out in those 5 seconds, that would be my first port of call.

Cheers, I was at Electric Picnic and the guy helping me out had a few in him at the time. I'll check the fuses tonight.

Don't forget there is one at the back of the stereo itself.

You sure he put them on the wrong way around? Jump leads normally spark a little when the connection is made.

With the radio is there anything coming up on the display, it's possible it has locked and needs a code to be entered?

Did this myself a few years back - someone was chatting to me and distracted, I fitted the battery in the wrong way. Fried an alternator and the fuse in the back of the radio. Check that fuse first at the rear of the radio, that's most likely blown.

I don't know if the Tigra is the same as the Combo but they are quite confusing if you are trying to go by colours as they are not red for + and black for neg like most out there.

You may be lucky and just have a fuse gone but you are as lucky as a black cat if it also hasn't done more damage. As Owen said alternators do not take kindly to reverse polarity jump starts!

A guy did it in the garage where I work to an oil tanker. They don't have a negative earth chassis and there was 1000's of damage done  Thankfully your car is not a tanker!
