Dublin considers giant screens for All-Ireland final
    06 September 2011

Dublin county board are in talks with Dublin City Council about the possibility of erecting giant TV screens - possibly in the Phoenix Park - to allow ticket-less supporters to watch Sunday week's All-Ireland final together.

The idea is similar to fanzones at World Cups where thousands of soccer fans gather to watch matches on big screens in host cities.

Dublin Lord Mayo Andrew Montague said in the Irish Independent: "We're in negotiations with the GAA county board. There's no agreement to do this yet, but these will be issues that will be raised."

With reports suggesting that the Dublin county board will receive an allocation of just 8,000 tickets for the eagerly-awaited clash with Kerry, thousands of fans are set to be disappointed, but it is hoped that the big screen idea will be the next best thing and will allow supporters to watch the game together.

Surely down beside the Point would be more ideal. Wasnt Crosby looking at doing some outside events such as this? (the O2 sorry )...

It should be nearer to town. Granted the PP is not THAT far away, as long as it is held fairly close to the Park Gate end & not the Castleknock end. But doing it in town would have a better atmosphere, and people could interact with all the happy Dubs fans knockin about the town as they return from the match.

or IN the point aka O2 which has a capacity of 15000.

They are opening it for the Ireland Australia Rugby match for free the day before.
They'd make a killing on selling booze which would more than cover the costs of opening for the day.

Is it me or is O'Connell Street the best bet for this?

I know Cork City Council were tempted to do it last year, but realized that people were either going to be in Dublin, or at home or pub.

That said, I actually think there would not be much of a crowd at any big screen. I'd say, come 3:00pm, ticketless fans would be off to their own local or couch to watch this game.

    Rugby team sponsored by O2.

GAA sponsored by Eircom and Dubs by Vodafone means this will be a non-runner.

Close down college green, big screen up in front of Trinity. It's a Sunday, very little impact on retailers. The traffic will be fecked anyway with the crowds going to Croker.

A good idea. I'm sure a few heads from Kerry will travel up without tickets too; it would be great for everybody who can't see the game live to get together and have the craic.

From the point of view of the bars in Dublin getting business they need, would it not be better anyway that they don't erect a big screen?
