Taper for Half Marathon

    Hi Folks,

I’m building towards the DCM at the end of next month and have to do my half marathon a week earlier than I thought.

I’m doing the Cork half on Sunday and was wondering what kind of taper I should be looking at... I did 17 miles on Sunday and eight last night as a recovery run.

I’m guessing that I should take Saturday off and maybe cut down the miles between now and Friday, but does anyone have any specific advice?

    Any help greatly appreciated.

At this stage I would just keep it ticking over, maybe do a 3 or 4 mile run today Thursday and Friday with maybe one mile at goal half marathon pace just to keep you sharp. And then I would take Saturday off and relax, and you'll be fresh as a daisy for Sunday. Good Luck

Thanks for the reply. I'll have to hold myself back so over the next few days so.

On another note, in the half marathon is it best to go well below marathon pace?

So, if you are aiming for sub-3h in the marathon, should you be aiming for well under 90 minutes for the half?

I'm not an expert when its comes to sub 3 hour marathon running, its something I've yet to achieve but from reading others peoples training logs and from friends who I train with, I'd say you would need to run at least 1:26 half marathon to get comfortably under the 3 hour mark. A friend of mine recently ran 2:58 for the marathon and he is a 1:24 half marathon runner as an example. As for your pace, you half marathon pace should be quicker than your marathon pace, i.e my half marathon pace is about 7:20- 7:30 and my marathon pace will be closer to 8 minute miles. Thats unless you are not racing the half and just using it as a training run.
