Yup, always have my Leica CRF 900 with me.
    DO THEY WORK AT NIGHT.

Yup. Some will work better than others. Some have better quality glass and better quality electronics than others and naturally give better results. Previous to the rangefinder I mentioned above I have a Nikon Prostaf laser 440, it was crap at night because even looking down the beam of the lamp it was terribly hard to "see" anything much. With the Leica, I can see a lot.
WOULD THEY BE TOO AWKWARD TO USE.

That depends. Most foxes you will have to range will be far out, so you will have time to use them. Most foxes that you don't get the time to range usually are that close you don't need to range them. The biggest worry is losing the damn thing (the range finder not the fox).

Thanks for replies. Can you use the fox or do you use background material to range find.I have a WMR rifle is there any need for a rangefinder whilst using that rifle.Would i have time to use it on a fox at 120 yds approx.

I can use the fox with the Leica, I'd bet that Tc can do the same with the Swaro, I couldn't with the Nikon, had to use a tree, bush, rock, etc that would be near by. Sometimes there wasn't anything near by and that made it useless.

I'm not familiar with the WMR, so will leave someone else to answer that. The fox will be the biggest factor, some will give you days to range them, others don't like hanging around at all.

The more you get out with the RF the less you'll need to use it, start looking around you and guess how far away things are at night, then range them. Practice will see ya get better at it.

The Swaro has a bigger square so would miss a fox (from reading reviews a long while back). I use the fox with my Leica 1200.

I shot foxes witht he WMR up unitl last January. I rarely took a shot without my lamp-man ranging the fox, it is especially critical with a round like the WMR because the difference between 120yards and 150yards can be a miss.

Now if I use the .270 I often don't range until after the shot because the round only rises and falls 1" to about 225yards...

They are WELL worth the money. I used John's and HAD to get one. I take it for rabbits as well with the .22lr, it's indespensible.

are you reloading up there Glensman, shooting foxes with a .270 would be pricey down here!! I must take mine out some night but I think I'd better put a moderator on it first or i'll wake up the parish!!!

Yes I'm loading- and it's no cheaper! I just make better rounds!
Edit: It is cheaper if you were comparing like for like. Rounds like I am making would be about £30 a box, but PRVI are only £10 a box...

Mine has a muzzle-brake on it, so I wake the next 2 parishes :D

There are a few lampers around here, I'm the only one that doesn't have to call to the farmers to Tell them I shot a fox!!

On a serious note, I sold the WMR a while back and bought a .223 with mod. Thought the paperwork would have been through by now but the dealer that took in my WMR messed something up and I cant get the .223 on to the WMR is off.

I'll still use the .270 up the mountain, but when Im lamping in Roscommon I'll use the .223. A lot less shooting goes on there and I don't want to be startling any aul wans.

The .223 is costing about 40p a bullet to load, I'm getting heads in from the states so the cost will fall to about 34p... I haven't worked out the cost of the .270 to load but you're talking around 60-65p.
